I guess I haven't weighed my Savage, I do have a bipod on the front that makes it a little front heavy, but nothing I notice when carrying it.

Does he look like the milk man?

I'd go with 7.62mm and if you want to try some really good ammo I've heard that Australian Army surplus 7.62mm is very reliable and accurate.

So the Creedmoor is a fairly heavy hitting cartridge and would be fine in an AR for white tail. Is there a more economical choice in an AR platform for said game that is also widely available? I see the 6.8 is hard to find and the 6.5 Grendel is tough as well. Or just go to an AR10 in 7.62x51?

For myself I have a 30-06 with 150gr.

This would be for a young'un after passing hunter safety and really likes the AR platform.

I myself have an armalite AR-10 7.62x51. I understand the 6.5 Creedmore has better balistics for long range but not significant enough for me.

308-762 is more readily avaialable and more cost effective and why I went with the AR-10 in 308.

A .308 may be just fine. As mentioned earlier, if the .308 round shoots well we can use the same Nosler bullet to reload both. If not, oh well. I was not sure if the CM could be chambered in a 15 or a 10. Jeff says 10 and I believe him. In the original post I did mention .308 (7.62x51).

On a side note, I have a 742 in 30-06 which is semi auto. It is really no different than a pump as it takes time to recover from the recoil. A .223 does give faster follow up shots but that is a Coyote cartridge.

The AR platform is very accurate in general so I see no problems with it. It is no different to me than a 760 Carbine with a factory 10 round mag. Now, if I could only find one in good shape.

Just a note: the "AR-10" is not standardized like the AR-15. There are two differnet AR style 10"'s. The Armalite AR15 and the DPMS style. Many parts are not interchangable. from the Armalite to the DPMS.

It is my understanding the Armalite AR-10 is only availalbe in 308-762x51 so do someresearch before purchasing.

Nice Brent!

Our hunting is a bit different here in CO as it is all walking, some sitting, more walking. This year we were in a new unit so that was interesting.

We walk a few miles every day during the season, but opening morning we sit until 9:00 or 9:30 as the deer are usually moving a lot at that time. This year nothing was moving, but I did see a nice sized deer early in the morning, but I could not see it in the old Tasco scope on my rifle. A new Burris or Leopold is on my wish list.

I am not sure, I haven't ever seen the milkman! :)

Both kids have not met a spoon they did not like other than his dislike of the lever action. They certainly have preferences. Her favorite loadout would be the 30AS with the High Standard Double Nine on her hip. He has a preference for a bolt action or semi auto and 1911 on his hip. The rifle he really wanted was a Wilson Combat in 300 Blackout, used for $550. Then he saw the price of ammo.

His rifle shipped so he should be a happy camper for a while. He just needs to grab some ammo. I think he only has a couple hundred rounds at the house.

Yeah, both of my sons grew up shooting single action revolvers, lever action rifles, black powder single shots, muzzle loaders, and all of that. Both are extremely competent with any of them, all the way back to flint locks.

Alas, their tastes run to the "black rifle" genre. FAL's, AR15's, etc. But you know what? They are both extremely enthusiastic shooters. And, well, they have drug me kicking and screaming into the 20th century, introducing me to, and teaching me to properly handle their choice in firearms. It's been a lot of fun. I'm just happy they grew up to be shooters, and did not lose interest once they started making their own way out there.

Amen to that!
