The loss of a pet is a special hurt...They are indeed family members...ones who have only given you their kind of love.

So, yes...as posted earlier...although he knows it, let him know he's loved.

(edit) I usually don't post these..but our old cat is on his last legs...kidneys, the vet says. Not yet ready for that final trip...but things pretty sad here as well.
The selfish part of the hurt is that because of our ages, Cindy & I know he's our last pet.

Losing a beloved pet is often as hard as, or even harder than losing a loved one (human loved one). With people, we know there is some level of understanding and acceptance with the one facing death. Not so with out pets - they are more "innocent", or "trusting" of us, or whatever. I know I'm not explaining that all too well, but I'm sure those of you who have lost pets understand. It can make it a lot harder.

I'm so sorry Vinny. Been there too many times. But I'm a sucker for pain and have a beautiful buddy that I'm going to spoil and hug tonight. I know one day he will cross that Rainbow Bridge, but we are going to have a heckuva lot of fun in the meantime.

I know you were the best thing to happen in his life, as he was in yours.

I’m sorry to hear about this. Please don’t “spoil the crap out of him and wait for him to die.” Spoil the crap out of him and celebrate every day of his life with him. You are his best friend and he knows your moods better than you do. Save the sadness for later.

Aw, poor pup. At least he doesn't appear to be in any pain. That is a blessing in itself. Enjoy every day to its fullest and spoil him. Lots of petting and skritches are in order.

I have been through this 7 times and my 2 current pups are getting on in age. It is never easy, but it is the price that we pay for unconditional love.

We have a rule in my house, never treat a pet like furniture. If you have to step over them, that deserves a pet....sometimes a biscuit too.

Sorry to hear you are losing a loved family member.

I am not a dog person, but it always hurts to say goodbye to a creature whose love is unconditional and thinks you are the best thing ever, even when you don't.

My wife says we will be welcome in doggy heaven. I suspect you will be too, with your buddy waiting for you.

Best
Les

Guys,
Thank you so much for the thoughts and kind words. You guys brought me to tears with your replies.
I don't post as much as I always have ( don't have a computer in front of me at work anymore like i used to,...) but always considered this place almost like a second home with a great group of friends. Thank you for that.
I've lost pets before, old age and sickness, but this one is a tough one to handle. I guess because it was unexpected, with no chance of helping him to cure his illness, and not knowing when his final day will be.

You already know this but I will say it anyway - your focus right now and through his final breath should be 100% Syd's comfort.

I posted here in March when I had to take Billabong to the overnight emergency vet to be put asleep due to lymphoma. She was never in pain - and to this day as hard as it was to make that excruciating decision - I felt I did the right thing - and that brings me peace....as it will you.

You know how to reach me if I can be of any help. Much love to you and your buddy......Baz and Winkipop
Baz, thank you Brother. We still really haven't gotten over losing Toby. We fought so hard to help him and he was still a pup basically. It will be 9 yrs Nov 20th

Pat, I hadn't looked it it that way. Thank you for that insight. Really appreciate it, and will definitely take your advice.

Thank you again guys.

Vinny

As the property of 2 dogs, I dread these inevitable situations.

Really sorry to hear that Vinman...give Syd another hot dog for me tonight.

It pains me to write this but we went through exactly the same diagnosis with our Vizsla Bodi..GD Hemangiosarcoma..! We did it all for him, sparing no expense. Thank god we decided to get pet insurance 2 years prior. Once he recovered from the Splenectomy, he actually did very well with Chemo and lasted a full 6 months after the initial diagnosis. But the last 3-4 days were tough. I gave him CBD which seemed to calm him down. He passed away August 18/19 at 9 1/2 much loved years of age...the day we'll never forget!

I'm tearing up now thinking about him and also your Syd:

Much happier times:

Miss you Bodi...

Sorry, Vinman, I didn't mean to hijack your thread....sending you and Syd much love!

So sorry to hear this about your pup, your companion, your buddy, your friend. It is so hard to see our four legged family members suffer and eventually leave us. We lost our toy poodle, Bentley, in June and it is still difficult at times without him being around, he was 14 and a half years old. I wish for you and your family and Syd, peace and comfort. Prayers for y'all.

Teared up for you myself, pal. My little dog is passed out on my lap as usual, until she gets too hot and then jumps down and flops on the floor.
The unique routines and personalities are what is so irreplaceable. Each dog is truly- truly- a gift. You both have been blessed.

Sorry to hear about Syd's diagnosis. Can't add much more than what has already been said.

Enjoy your time with him.
