I have a mid 80's 7240PE.
Just paid $100 to have the pots cleaned and all the soldering redone. Tec told me it was a great amp and worth keeping. The old NADs pack way more power than their rating.

A few years ago, I bought an NAD 3020 for my computer (IMAC) audio system. It drives some vintage BA acoustic suspension bookshelf speakers. Very nice.
Dang, I remember the time windows. I did not sell those. I remember going to see Animal House right as it came out in 1978 right before freshman year. I was headed to the college that largely inspired the screenplay. I had not visited the college, and I knew few that had. I went with 3 guys, a soph, a junior and a senior. Once I got to campus about 3-4 weeks later I visited the frat house room of the senior, and he had some time windows. They sounded great. He told me that while they sounded great, their better value was as "conversations pieces" with the Smithees he entertained in his frat house room. That frat used 901s as their dance speakers.

I have two sets of first edition Time Windows. Agree they are fabulous still. Very dependent on placement but keep them some distance from the wall and the rear firing speakers really create a sound stage. Got to figure out how to keep the cats from ripping the fabric.
Also had a set of JBL L100 studio monitors that I bought as L88's. They were the two way version. For around $100 a speaker, JBL sold the mid-range driver and a new cross over. Should have never sold them. Great rock and roll speakers. Zep's first album on those speakers with enough amp power, yep, those were the days

Forgot to mention... I know you stated "used" and a ~$300 budget. When I started with similar specs, I decided to spend a bit more than that on a new 3020 partially because I use a desktop as a signal source. I considered the 3020 a "last time buy," and I wanted to have some modern circuits designed for CPU-type signal sources.
My last audio "last time buys" for amplification were a Yamaha C4 in 1980 and an Adcom 555 in the late 80's/early 90's. Need to get the C4 refurbed.

i recently picked up a phillips 7871 for $200 with new pots. i’m amazed. it’s part of my garage system but really deserves to take the place of my bryston in the family room i think. one of the last made in usa amps from late 70s. unfortunately hard to find. but if you see one i highly recommend it

about 15 years ago i sent it back because the selector switch came loose and it seemed to be overheating. i clearly remember the bryston tech called me on the phone while he had it on the bench. yes, great people and great gear

Wasn't high dollar. A pair of Hafler amps, bridged, and Hafler preamp driving two pair of stacked larger
Advents. I was a rocker. |

I’m realizing I need, or at least would like, an amp that allows connecting an equalizer or DSP between the pre amp and power amp. I’m guessing this rules out a fair number of less expensive candidates.

@jyl, that should be just about every amp out there. Run the output from the pre-amp/processor to the equalizer/DSP then the output from the equalizer to the amp.

There are lots of integrated amps that have PRE out's and MAIN in, usually have a u shaped pin joining the two, you will have to check for that if you want to use EQ. The NAD 326 and 370 both allow for eq, also something like a Rotel RA980bx could also work for you.
You could also consider a Denon PMA600ne, no pre out but has subwoofer out.

Hmmm, lots of IAs and receivers have that feature. My 70s Nikko receiver did and my Denon as well. If you also need speakers, why not get a pair of powered speakers and a preamp that suits your needs? For modern pro sound/studio, this is the way to go.

thankfully my NAD's don't have any PRE outs.
But I do have a subwoofer out.

I sort of like the Advent Model 300. They are old enough that their capacitors are tired but if you can find a restored one, you might like it. they do have the "Pre Out" and Poweramp In" RCA connectors. Quite low wattage, but functional, particularly with efficient speakers. I also happen to like Large Advents, for speakers. In fact, the vintage bookshelf ones are also good. Again, my recommendation would be for a rebuilt pair. All this stuff is relatively dirt cheap.
