Thanks! The only real skills involved with the ceiling were avoiding disaster. Fastening 13" wide 15 ' long boards by myself took a bit of figuring out but disaster was avoided. The walls will be Pecky Cedar as you can see in this pic. No candles allowed in the cabin! Ceiling battens were glued and pin nailed on one side only to allow for expansion/contraction of the wide boards |
I guess this is the best place to post this...
My mistake could be your gain.. I saw magnetic feathers for table saws and decided I needed them.. so I ordered, When I got it, it sat because I was between projects...fast forward to me starting up another project, out come the feathers.. and alas my table saw has a composite top.. so these are no use to me... First person to pm gets them... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693259462.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693259334.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693259334.jpg |
I have no idea what that is.
This vid was very informative <iframe width="781" height="439" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uxNvIhzDU_k" title="Carving a Lambs Tongue Detail with Tom McLaughlin" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I'm going to post my little projects here... instead of the fixing thread..
Finished a charcuterie board/serving tray that my GF instantly absconded with.. That's ok... I have more wood.. Black Walnut.. I layered the epoxy to emulate 3D rushing water.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693264046.jpg In person the layers all blend to look like a quick running stream... hard to photo.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693264162.jpg |

This vid describe use of feather pretty well, and shows the magnetic one I mistakenly bought...
And yes I used to make my own feather boards frequently... I saw this on my feed and impulse bought <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WX1KJO0cWRQ?si=TD0H6W-LtOz-n5wc" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I've got this on the way. Millers Falls #97.
It's got 5 modes (in addition to the 2 speeds) Mode 1 - turn the crack and the bit goes the direction that you're turning. Mode 2 - turn the crank clockwise and the bit goes clockwise, turn the crank the other way and it ratchets. (useful if you can't get a full rotation due to tight space) Mode 3 - The same as mode 2 but for left handed rotation Mode 4 - Turn the crank in either direction and the bit goes clockwise Mode 5 - Turn the crank in either direction and the bit goes counter-clockwise. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693265452.jpg |

This is pretty hard core. Some guy posted a photo to a facebook group. He lives in an apt.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693589872.jpg And completely unrelated is another guy that builds new handles for old hammers... out of rosewood! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1693507147.jpg |
Almost finished with a table I made... just waiting on more epoxy to arrive

Got a start on the pecky Cedar walls to go with the knotty ceiling in the cabin. No trim at the sliders. I prefer the routered round over, butt to glass look. Less is cleaner with the busy peck. Beautiful table Tim! love the "moving" water. Thanks again for the feather board, it's already been put to use. I love the quick release powerful magnets for quick set up.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694059835.jpg Fastened my 9' toboggan to the ceiling. I'm guessing it's from the'40s. |
I'm not sure if I posted this...
The GF wants a table she can use over her firepit...obv when it not in use http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694217618.jpg So I got a nice slab of Elm.. it has a lot of character.. this is roughly 3in thick... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694219087.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694217695.jpg Initial cut and trying to figure out how I want the pieces to be .. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694217934.jpg I brought the pieces back to the shop, and had them flattened and trued to a much more manageable 2-1/8 in... a 3 in slab of Elm that large is heavy http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694218054.jpg Excavating some rot and punky wood.. also filling in cracks and check with a black epoxy mix http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694218144.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694218181.jpg |
Nice, can't wait to see the finished product!

For some reason the pic of the slab didn't appear in the original post... so I edited
it in.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694219087.jpg |
When I was a kid, and my Dad taught me about woodworking... he often said when we began a project "lets make some sawdust"

I'd bet that staircase cost as much as my truck + both of my motorcycles.

Im gonna say that staircase is not wood.

I just got a #80 cabinet scraper... I'll use it as the final finish before applying a finish coat. Even though this Black walnut piece has tight closed grain,, there are areas where even after using 600 grit mesh some of the grain fuzzes up...I should be able to shave the fuzz with this scraper.. The areas where the grain stays raised is the transition between the dark and light wood..
The scrapers path to me is pretty convoluted... Since you cant buy a tool like this at any retail store around here.... forget Home Depot.. So I ordered from Amazon.... I didn't notice that this tool was coming from Australia.. with Prime shipping it arrived quickly.. When I unboxed it I noticed the tool was made in England... So I bought a tool That originated in England from a place in Australia...I'm in New York http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694379506.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694379506.jpg |
Nice, I've wanted a scraper for a while. I see that there are hand held scrapers (you just hold the "blade"), and then there are a few old style scrapers, some like what you've got there that are kind of like a spoke shave, and others that are like what you've got but even bigger.
Your scraper is a jet setter! England to Aus to NY. That's quite a trip, hell, it's almost back where it started! |
This guy is for sale on a vintage tool auction. Currently up to $70+shipping. Auction ends tonight.
Could end up at $75 or could end up at $120, you never know. I suspect quite a bit more than you paid, but pretty cool. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694386117.jpg Someone else has a Veritas similar to yours up for $60 with no bids, but I suspect it'll get a few before the end. |
Link? I'd buy that..
I had a beautiful molding plane set... not as big as the one always pictured on the net but the box, and tools were beautiful, also assorted sizes of spokeshaves... They were destroyed when my basement flooded from Sandy.. The box split into pieces when it dried, all the handle split and fell off and the tooling rusted together in clumps |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694387006.jpg Good group with good people. In the last 2 years that I've been in the group, I've only heard of one or maybe two issues. It's a mostly tight-nit group of good folks. I've purchased a bunch of stuff and never had an issue. Quote:

I'm calling this one done.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1695079919.jpg Ran into some issues putting the final coat of resin on.. seems like the cambium suddenly had to out gas a lot of bubbles... Usually you can burst the bubbles with a quick pass of a MAPP torch... but the epoxy had kicked and got to thick, so I had to sand a large area out and reseal with thinner resin.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1695080313.jpg There are just a few dust motes in the finish... I'll polish them out maybe... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1695080399.jpg |

I've seen a bunch of epoxy stuff on YT and various woodworking facebook groups. Most of it is uninspired, but your table looks like water, and your marble look is VERY impressive!

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696100582.jpg Capped my solid core entry door with the ⅞ Pecky Cedar. A very heavy door now. Struggled with a hand truck to get it back in the cabin then had to use a crow bar and block to lift it back on the hinges |

I've seen a lot of epoxy builds (mostly table/counter tops), and most of them are pretty snoozy, but yours have been very nice. I've seen one or two on YT that were also very nice. |
I had some small pieces of walnut leftover, so I made her another Charcuterie board ...

"The great wave off Kanagawa" http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1701478071.jpg I'm trying to figure out the order of the application of different colors, and how and what I'll need to mask..The big wave will need to be outlined by brush because the contrast with the sky is small.. FWIW this painting was an inspiration for one of my tattoos... incorporating my zodiac sign, and the surf... ( l live 4 miles from the ocean) |
