L-1:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723466529.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723466529.jpg

At any rate…I created the parts for the L-1 from a compressed wood/resin laminate, using a table saw to cut out blanks, then a router table with micro adjustable fence - using a series of bits, including a number of round-over bits to create those curves and radii…using a series of phenolic templates I’d created - which I’d then double-stick-tape to the wood/resin blanks so that the bit-bearings could follow them.

A nice property of the wood/resin product is that the “finish” is achieved by simply buffing on a wheel. Cyanoacrylate adhesives were used to glue up wood/resin parts.

Downsides are that the materials are heavy, and very dangerous to work with on a high-speed/high powered router - especially the very small pieces…which can really fly! Amazed that I still have all of my fingers!

Wow! that's impressive. How many hours do you have into this project?

Just getting started into basic woodworking.

Now that I’m retired I want to get started on some woodworking projects. I’m never going to be able to do anything like what I see on this thread, but I do want to build some basic bookcases for our sunporch. And also put some shelving up in my garage. I don’t have a lot of room for a tablesaw, but after doing a lot of research, I settled on a Dewalt 7491 portable tablesaw. I already have a good portable miter saw, and numerous sanders, drills, etc. I like that the Dewalt has a fence that will open up to 32 inches on the right side, but stores in a fairly compact space. Once I get my garage shelving built, I’ll be able to store the saw so it is relatively well protected. I also like that there are any number of YouTube videos on using this particular saw. And lots of accessories to buy!

I had a very similar saw for at least 10 years and built a ton of stuff with it. Enjoy!

Gawldamn, that camera is gorgeous. You and your family and ancestors and descendants should be proud of you for that level of craftsmanship. Nice.

My "carpentry" skills are way more rudimentary, but I did finally get around to a project last week that has been bugging me for a while; I had lots of wasted space above my drill press and I had a vision of shelves for my various specialty vises; in addition, there was more wasted space (because of earlier poor planning) where I thought I'd like to store my bench grinders and such.... (I've been on this kick lately of trying to store "likes with likes". It has every hallmark of an idea that could maybe lead to obsessive behavior.)

I drew up some crude plans and was about to head to the local lumberyard, but a lucky occurrence guided me to a shelving unit that someone was throwing out. It netted me 6 8' and 4 6' two-bys and some quarter inch hard masonite plus some scraps of various woods including clear hard maple. Pretty good score for free. 1 of the 8 footers had a pretty gnarly twist, but the rest of the wood was straight and clean. Previous owner said it was built in '94 and believe me when I tell you, if this is a representative example, the difference in the quality of dimensional wood from then to now is shocking. Score. Free. Happy day.

So, a few days of light, very slow work has netted me a chance to tetris even more crap into my garage for my family and friends to toss into an ever larger dumpster, but it kept me out of the bars or the gambling dens and gave the neighbors a chance to wonder aloud what in the world goes on over there. I'm very pleased with the way both of these projects have turned out and man, free is a very good price for lumber.

Here's the free shelving unit that I dismantled:

A good starting point is to buy a 'basic' shelf/cupboard and then add your own trim, baseboard, crown etc. I hate IKEA, but I have made some of their stuff look pretty good.

I have also done built-ins from scratch, and I sure appreciate the time saved by buying a prefab cabinet.

You should have seen the Baldor that I sold. The guy drove 100 miles for it he wanted it so bad....

I've never used a prefab as a base, but I have done a few built-ins from scratch, and yes, it's certainly a time suck.

It was time to refinish all the tables, benches and counters I built long ago for the deck at my mountain home. A harsh environment. The temperature swing can be 100° and in a few months this stuff will all be snow drifts. I don't have high expectations but I'm trying 3 coats of oil based Helmsman spar eurothane by MinWax. I sanded with my disc sander instead of a belt sander for a rustic surface. In these pics you can see it better on the bench.

masraum 08-14-2024 01:33 PM

Wow, looks great! Harsh environment for sure. I assume that finish should protect about as well as could be expected.

All my closets are done with IKEA PAX cabinets (modified). And my wife's sewing room is six doors of PAX, on a platform, to add baseboard, and crown molding up top. They don't look like IKEA.

I've done the same. Used 4 large PAX cabinet doors to make a wall to wall closet and cut up one of their cabinets for a laundry room sink/vanity.

URY914 08-15-2024 08:36 AM

I always head to the returned/closeout department at our IKEA.
They always have doors and shelves super cheap. $5 for a 6' door, etc..
Cheap material for building shop items. ;)

1990C4S 08-15-2024 04:28 PM

^^^ Great place to find cheap workbench tops.

masraum 08-15-2024 06:32 PM

I don't like most river/resin stuff (except Tim's is orders of magnitude better than almost everything else I've ever seen).

Besides Tim's work, this is the second river/resin work that I've seen that I think is pretty cool.

These were posted on FB.

That dresser is very cool...I'm filing that away for a future project

Another idea I have is a headboard for my bed.

My latest table still needs quite a bit of work...onward

TimT 08-16-2024 08:51 AM

I'm not sure where I got the pic.. maybe this thread? but this a cool magnetic knife holder

I spent a few hours working on my table today... The last few weeks have been disgustingly hot and humid so I slacked...

About 2 hours and many discs of sandpaper... and its almost ready for finish coat

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1723932393.jpg

If you mist the wood/epoxy with alcohol you get the idea what it will look like with the finish coat of epoxy...

I'm getting close....

I spent a few hours today cleaning up the bottom of the table...

If the resin on the bottom isn't cleaned up enough.. the table wont be see through..

So.. I went through the whole sanding regimen... 80 > 320 grit in steps..

I think what I planned to be the bottom of the table has more character than the top..

A little bump on the learning curve, and something to file away..

Final coat of finish drying down today. I dropped a few Ponderosa Pines (yellow pine) 35 years ago and let the logs sit on the ground to blue up a bit before I milled it into flooring. I was careful during install to not put blue boards side by side. After 35 years it was definitely due for a sand and re finish. That's the beauty of wood, it can be reborn again

Thanks. This is the downstairs floor at my mountain cabin. I'm getting too old for refinishing floors, this will be the last time. I have a great finish guy I use for flooring jobs I sell. He would have done it for me but it's 150 miles from where we live and I figured I'll do it myself one more time.

One last time is good when it's yours.

Something that I just bought. 3" timber slick. I've wanted one since I realized that 2.5' long 2-4" wide chisels were a thing.
Because when you need a chisel AND you're in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

The slick was used mostly by boat builders back in the day. Check out this 2' iron gouge I have. It's even older than the slick. I've been told around 200 years old. I have a weakness for hand tools pre electricity. I have a bunch

Very cool. I had heard that slicks were mostly boat building and a bit of timber construction of buildings. It's shocking that something that big isn't used with a hammer but is just pushed with the body.

I recently purchased a screw arm plow plane that came with 15 cutters. I've been wanting one for a while.

I've got a 1/2" reverse ogee molding plane on the way so I can make molding for door stops that matches what's in our place where someone has put modern molding in.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1724373494.jpg

I've also got a few other wooden planes, a match set 3/4" TnG, plus a screw arm planking plane (large, adjustable tongue), and another pair of TnG planes marked 8/8, plus a couple other random wooden planes. I've got a slew of old cast iron planes, braces, breast drills, chisels. I have to stop myself from spending more money on old tools.

If these items bring you joy I don't see it as a waste of money. I just hope at least one of my grandkids or future great grandkids will appreciate these relics from a slower and very different time

Agreed. If it gives you joy, then enjoy. It is a shame if the next generations don't care. What's even worse is when they just throw stuff in the trash.
