May be ready for another dog

Hey guys as some of you have followed my posts over the last two years we lost all three of our daschunds ☹️ . They grew to the ripe ages of 16/17/18 so they had a great run . But it hurt each time .

About two weeks ago I start looking online at the local shelter websites and CL to see what is available . I have no preference of puppy or adult . But today I found a brand new CL ad for a sheprador 11 week old male pup . Yep a mix between german shepherd and black lab . He is mostly black with white patches he is a cutie 😁 .

Online research says this will be medium in size and 40-80 lbs. with a good disposition . The current owners are moving and can't take the pup with them . Going to go meet the pup tomorrow morning . Any of you guys own one of these ? We can provide love and exercise so no issues there .

i have a friend that said the best way to honor a dog we lost is to pass our love onto the next one. it makes sense to me, in an odd way.

your new dog sounds like cutie!! and kudos to you for taking on a puppy!!! i'll tip a beer to you and your couch, your shoes, your carpet, your door trim..etc. hahha

just kidding..i love puppies, but being a full time worker kills that option for me.

rfuerst911sc 11-30-2020 02:02 PM

Not ours yet he still has to pass the meet and greet 😁 . Also the ad has been pulled off CL . The way I left it with the owner was she is to text me tomorrow morning and setup a time to meet . So we will know something for sure tomorrow .

We lost our black lab two years ago almost to the day. We had a huge vacuum in our family and we all knew that another dog was needed to fill that vacuum. Enter Chester. He is a huge pain and amazingly wonderful at the same time. The loss is still there, but many walks and other distractions have dulled the pain.

Good luck. This is hard.

best of luck, to your family AND the dog..:D i hope it works out. imagine having to give up a pet because you have to move? ouch..

Good luck, I lost my 15yo pug Casey Jones a few years ago. I still had my GSD and she got to play with my ex wifes puppy a lot when I was traveling for work so that helped her adjust to being in a single dog household. Since I was traveling it was not fair to get another puppy that I could not spend time training.

Then came 2020 and my work travel ground to a halt in March like everyone. Delilah wasn't getting the playing time as often and seemed down. Coupled with my daughter being a senior in HS I figured it was time.

Enter Tenny (short for Tennessee Jed) our new pug who is now almost 6 months old. He has been a challenge as all puppies are but I wouldn't change a thing. Delilah and him play constantly and for a 12yo GSD that is a good thing.

And yes, there is a common theme on how we name them :)

flipper35 11-30-2020 02:19 PM

If it has the lab disposition they are great family dogs. We had two and both were very good with people. Unless they did something threatening, then they could manage to look intimidating to let you know that wasn't acceptable. I only heard our last lab bark maybe four times in the 8 years we had her.

That yellow lab just passed unexpectedly last Tuesday in her sleep and we are wondering what to do as well. We have a beagle mix that is now more lonely when we are gone. He sits at her dog house and howls.

Skytrooper 11-30-2020 02:25 PM

I have a sheprador. He is an awesome dog ! probably the best we ever owned. Ours looks mostly like a shepherd, but his ears do not stand up. I don't mind that at all. He is very intelligent ! Always happy and energetic. He absolutely loves people and is a real stick tight (shadow), follows us everywhere. He is a real joy. We got him 11 years ago from the shelter. he wasn't even 6 months old and was picked up as a stray. He had no trouble adjusting, none.

craigster59 11-30-2020 02:31 PM

A Shepard/ Lab mix is the best of both worlds. Smart, loyal and hopefully loves water. Great with kids and easy to train. Best of luck! Even though they may be the new member, they do help fill that hole in your heart.

KFC911 11-30-2020 03:17 PM

You'll know!

Post pics when ya get the pup home :)!

Chocaholic 11-30-2020 04:58 PM

There is no “shopping” for a puppy. The deed is as good as done.

Let me be the first to say congrats!

peppy 11-30-2020 05:43 PM

Congratulations on the puppy!!

I hate dogs, they bark and slobber and beg for my food! They **** in the yard and i step in it!!

I'm so glad Lucy came to live with us, I think I'm a better person because she is here.

All of this is supposed to be sarcastic. I could never get used to outliving a pet, until my wife showed me how to deal with it!

Bill Douglas 11-30-2020 11:19 PM

Talk with your vet first. there are a lot of mixed breeds where the mixture of parts just don't fit. Your vet won't want you to take on a problem case.

Sounds like there is going to be one happy dog at your house soon!
They need love, exercise, and training.
We got Madison at 9 weeks old 12 1/2 years ago, took her to socialization class and to puppy school and continued training. She is a joy to be around. Won't go through a door without permission, never pees in the house, has a number of cute tricks she can do.

We got Owen Walter 6 years ago to bring more life into the house (had something to do with the death of our grandson). Owen didn't go to puppy school and didn't get much training. He's a problem child who does pretty much whatever he wants to do, and I'm sure it is due to a lack of training.

ckelly78z 12-01-2020 02:47 AM

Through certain giveaway situations, we now have 4 dogs in the house (65# Aussie, 10#Cavalier King Charles, 10# Pomeranian, and their offspring (a puppy CCC/Pom mix) This is too many dogs that all need to go out at the same time (Aussie is free range) on leashes that get woven like a celtic knot.

We love them all, but won't have 4 dogs ever again, especially when they all shed at the same time.

I think every house needs a dog (or two), but have given up on cats altogether.

rfuerst911sc 12-01-2020 06:15 AM

No pup today radio silence from the owner. I assume they found him a new home . I texted the owner this morning and no reply . Oh well there are plenty out there to rescue .

KFC911 12-01-2020 06:23 AM

:( ... and I was just gonna post asking where the pics were.

Some other lucky pup will sniff you out :)

JFK713 12-01-2020 07:02 AM

sorry to hear about that rfuerst, but you are right, there are plenty of deserving dogs out there. We recently rescued Ryker to replace our late boy Ronin. Here he is ready to leave the shelter.

KFC911 12-01-2020 07:27 AM

^^^ Good looking dawg :). I thought I was gonna get a GSD a couple of years ago .... fell through in a bad way (for the Breeder/litter) .... so I immediately went on a mission ... Lab or Golden .... whichever came first :).

All three are awesome breeds imo....

Thanks . Ryker is a great looking dog I am sure you will have years of joy with him . And good for you to rescue him .

JFK713 12-02-2020 06:28 AM

Thanks! I'm sure you will find the right dog waiting for you.

jhynesrockmtn 12-02-2020 06:47 AM

Sorry the pup didn't work out. I'm always leery of those who advertise dogs on CL. You'd be surprised the number of dogs who get taken from yards, etc. and then sold or the backyard breeders who sell pups with questionable lineage. If it was being given away that is a different story. Hopefully your local rescue community will have the right dog for you.

rfuerst911sc 12-02-2020 07:31 AM

I just did a 25 mile search on local humane society shelters and came up with 7 pages of results . Many great dogs but one that caught my eye is a 6 month old german shorthaired pointer .

So I have started the conversation via email as requested by the website . Hopefully something will come of it . I am in no rush and want to get the right dog for us . As we all know it is a long term commitment for all involved .

vash 12-02-2020 08:27 AM

my mom had a GSP. wildest dog of my youth. you know those decorative lamppost you have in your yard?. my mom's dog was last seen dragging her's across the yard. i was away at college.

they named that dog Scott, which a chinese person cannot pronounce..he was called Scotch. hahha..

never saw that dog again. or the lamp-post.

rfuerst911sc 12-03-2020 01:27 PM

The facility with the GSP sent me an email this morning stating there is a waiting list for that dog . So moving on to the next one 😁 . This morning on CL an ad popped up for an 11 month old male sheprador for free. The people are moving to a different place that doesn't allow pets. I am working with the owner to see if we can see the dog Saturday morning . We will see if this one pans out .

KFC911 12-03-2020 01:55 PM

Does the Lab color make much difference, even GSDs vary a lot too. Hoping for ya :)

Just found out the dog's name ....... Lucifer 😡 . That will get changed to Luke instantly 😁 . His face has typical GSD black/tan colors with a mostly black body . Just heard from the owner we are good for a Saturday morning meet and greet . They have requested the records from their vet so slowly coming together .

Skytrooper 12-03-2020 02:12 PM

That is sounding very promising ! Good luck ! Mine is all black except for his paws and lower legs which have shepherd coloring.

Thanks . Funny this guy has black body but all four legs from the feet to about half way up the legs is GSD brown/tan. Owner just sent additional pics my wife and I getting excited . Hopefully it all works out .

KFC911 12-03-2020 02:48 PM

If anyone has a female Shepradore from a Yellow Lab ... named Angel, available ... dibs!

Pics guys ;)

rfuerst911sc 12-03-2020 04:35 PM

Ok we have established a public place to meet at 8:30 Saturday morning . Unless the bastard bites me or my wife 😁 we should be a go .

wdfifteen 12-03-2020 05:28 PM

I hope things go well and "the bastard" comes home with you. Good call on the name abbreviation. (where the hell is that thumbs up emogi)?

Bill Douglas 12-03-2020 08:21 PM

I grew up with a GSP called Kip. A truly great dog! A pile of fun and laughs too.

rfuerst911sc 12-05-2020 08:45 AM

Well Luke is now in his new home ! Took him for a one mile walk he poops like a dinosaur 🦕 . I just got him settled down to take two pics will post them later . He rides great in the car and he's good on the leash . He just has lots of energy to burn 😁 .

craigster59 12-05-2020 09:29 AM

Congratulations! Nalu approves!

rfuerst911sc 12-05-2020 10:35 AM

Not the best pics but he rarely sits still :D . He is a good dog so far he rode well in the car and walks good on a leash . We have to work on him jumping up on people but he sits most of the time when given the command . Luke say's hello to the forum SmileWavy

Seahawk 12-05-2020 10:59 AM

^^^Excellent.

We have rescued a number of dogs over the years and I can say without reservation that Luke won the lottery.

He knows, btw...but he'll make you work for it:D

Love it.

rfuerst911sc 12-05-2020 11:45 AM

Thanks hawk . When we met in the parking lot this morning he came over to my wife and I with no hesitation and a wagging tail . He is very loving and wants to be petted . He just seems very happy and eager to please . He sure likes watching the birds at our feeders . Must be the lab in him .

Been a looong time since we have had a pup so the high energy is refreshing . If we can break him of the jumping the rest will be easy . Looking forward to a long life together .

Baz 12-05-2020 11:57 AM

Congrats to Luke and his new humans!

Well done by all! :)

KFC911 12-05-2020 12:10 PM

He will have y'all trained in no time... congrats on the new pup :)!
