I remember when I thought I was good. I was beating friends, relatives and co-workers. Then I looked up the local Chess Club. Went down there twice and got beat by the weakest players.
A universal language. Great game.

I have a stand alone electronic board that identifies every move. Excalibur Grandmaster.
I connected a variable voltage supply to the house voltage and when it starts whoopin' me, I start dropping the voltage a little at a time until it starts making mistakes.

Love chess, a teacher in grade 5 got all the students to play it in home room everyday. Taught my kids and like to play on the iPad. It’s been a little while but still a great game. Have won a few times with the 4 move checkmate over the years.

I used to work with a guy who had a board on his desk and would always ask me to play and I would always say no. Finally I gave it but told him it had to be speed chess, I beat for like 10 days straight, and I never did see his chess board on his day again.

Man, I gotta brush up . I was holding my own for the last few weeks, and we were pretty much heads up , then he just destroyed me 3 in a row like it was his job.
Good fun,
We all used to drink at this dirty little working mans bar after hours, and the bartender put out a chess board. We had a winters long competition . It was funny to see truck mechanics, and construction workers all dirty from a days work, knee deep in concentration playing chess, instead of chasing skirts and fighting .
Any body here ?
I used to, but video games ended it quickly. I still have a nice chess table somewhere, it has a wood base, with drawers, and the pieces are ivory

I play with a few friends who are really into it. Like anything else, easy to learn, difficult to master.

Taught my grandson to play chess.

He has been playing online and has gotten better, a lot better. Like if I am a little tired he is handing my ass to me better. I think he told me he is in the top 20% that play online around here.

Phew...was wondering for a minute.

In college, we would play Pinochle from night to class-time the next morning sometimes.
Very addictive game.

Guy is there setting up a chess board - looks up and says do you play. I say a little, but it's been a while - and he asks if I'll play. He takes 1st move - I start my play with the first move of what is known as the Scholars Mate. I take the game in 4 moves. It was pretty funny.

Aha this must be what happened to me the other day! I just signed up at chess.com for some brain exercise and managed to lose a game in just a few moves. I was like 'ok let's see what I want to do next' and bam the game was over!

I know this is an old thread but it surely does illustrate what a great resource Pelican is for so many things. Not sure how long I'd have gone before I learned about this otherwise.

^^^ I've used that a few times for opponents that have never seen it before.
Almost always leads to the last game they want to play.

I’m not good at strategy games. Backgammon is about as complicated a strategy game as I can handle. It’s embarrassing, because I’m not dumb, but my brain just doesn’t work that way.

I played in college a few years. Once or twice my head was in the right place and I could not be beaten for a day or two by other chess noobs like me so that's as good as it got.

I'd like to play bridge but I can't figure it out. AFA chess, I liked to play with no knowledge or training. Just ad hoc throwing moves at the other player. I'd loose eventually but the funny thing is the better player knew it was over before I did. They had to play it out to the end before I'd quit making frantic moves. So I guess predictive analytics is out of my reach.

I'd love to play poker too but I'm not a mathematician. All the pros are. I'm not that quick to read other people either and they have that down to a science. Too much work to have any fun.

I learned to play when I was 6 or seven, with a board very similar the one below but with paper pieces with the moves printed on them.

I was not good then and that seems to be a trend...

I learned in high school when our science teacher started a club. I did well enough to represent our school as part of the team. Funny thing: my pulse when playing would go from 60 bpm at rest to 125 when playing. It was a bit embarrassing sitting at the table with enough adrenaline coursing through my body that I was making everything vibrate.
I haven't played in decades. Don't need the stress.
