The name of the paint color is International Orange. But I insist that it's red. Kind of a brick red. My wife thinks I'm crazy, and insists that it's orange. We live sort of near it and drive over it often, so it's been a long-standing argument.

If I remember correctly it was the primer color on a lot of the steel. When the designer saw how great it looked he pushed to have it painted that color.

Orange to me.

When the steel for the Golden Gate Bridge was fabricated by Bethlehem Steel at its foundries in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the steel was coated with a red lead primer. As the bridge towers began to rise for the Golden Gate Bridge, consulting architect Irving F. Morrow was commuting to the construction site from his home in the East Bay via ferry. He became inspired by the red lead color. Morrow undertook color studies, which resulted in the specification of the unique Golden Gate Bridge International Orange because it blended well with the nearby hills and contrasted with the ocean and sky.

Looks like red-orange to me. :D

BTW...I was taken across that bridge a day after being born - June 1954 on Mare Island.

Just because the colors name is orange doesn't mean it is actually orange. Seriously.

BTW, it's always being sand-blasted and repainted. It's a full time job keeping one step ahead of the rust. And they don't use no POR-15.

it's officially called International Orange. I read somewhere that the actual paint formulation isnt available to the public.

Its a amazing structure up close.

Have always loved that bridge, Brooklyn too. When I made a t-shirt with it, I mixed up a deep red for the bridge but ended up doing the squid in the red. It sold really well across the country.

To the OP. You are right. It is red.

More men are color blind than women. But excluding the color blindness issue men can see the colors as well as women.

I worked in the professional photography photo labs for 30+ years total. Color is very subjective, and it is hard to get a new person to go for neutral gray and make a photo "look right" and produce a color print on light sensitive silver halide photo paper. Some people just can't do it.

And that is an orange bridge.

There are only 6 primary colors. This color wheel is screwey but the first I found in a quick search.

Red, Green Blue, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. The rest oar just combinations of those colors.

Rhymes with door hinge.

Digital photos of red/orange are notoriously wonky, then on top of that add that many/most folks increase saturation of digital photos to make them pop and what you see may not be the same as the real view. Also, there's a huge variation in what monitors display.
Red colors fade the worst/fastest, so I'm sure the color changes over time.
The color probably also looks different depending upon the light conditions and weather.

Yer wife is right and that bridge is red :D

Blue and orange are complementary colors. From the photo, the shadows in the bridge appear to be bluish. Nice choice in color selection. I imagine the bridge looks different at different times of the day and season.

The name of the color is that just, a name.
