Hard to see in this pic but it's about 14 inches. Dry when it started wetter near the end but only 2 0r 3 inches were wet.

This is the Way. A few years ago we had water dripping from our pendants in the kitchen and it turns out the water was coming from the roof. Between some daytime thaws and nightime freezes, the gutters were solid with ice and further melting snow had no where to go but back up under the asphalt shingles. We had gallons of water that let go when I chopped a channel through the gutter ice dam, but the damage was done.
An expensive lesson.

Yep. I don't worry about the snow load on my cabin roof, I worry about a warm storm and heavy rain on top of a bunch of snow

Depends on whether you designed the roof support yourself.

Looks like a 6/12 tying into an 8/12. I say it's good! Right up until it's not.

I shovel a bunch of my roof when it gets about 2 foot. because it gets heavy if you leave it. But im young and dumb. I think it can take it. I have alot of really crappy sheds built with rotten wood and large spans. They hold up surprisingly well. I had one beam break when we got 41" after it was sitting a few days and got heavy. It was a very rotten beam im surprised lasted that long. That was the only failure iv had in 15 years. a roof rake works ok and looks liek you would have good access with one to take off the problem areas

So 25psf with what 10ft means 250plf additional load.

Sounds fine to me ...

until it's not but then the porch should give way first giving you ample warning as long as you don't sleep under it !

I asked my FIL what the building inspector had to say... he said they weren’t getting it inspected and that the carpenter that they paid cash to said it was fine.

It was so bad, it stressed me out. I’m waiting for a good dump of wet snow so I can see how much design factor remains...
Meh. Calgary rarely sees cold weather. Or snow.

This is 2-3 times per year chore. Roof rake works great.

got one of those today but the severity of my vertical challenge doesn't permit much more than clearing the bottom bits. at least I'll avoid ice dams.

edit: oh and now my shoulders ache like mad.

My 'roof rake' has a plastic toboggan that trails the edge to slide the snow off.
It works great and it slides the snow off in a long section.

Maybe the ones above have the same..hard to tell
If you get one that just grabs a chunk of snow and you pull...it will not be fun.

The roof rake above is simply a flat plate on the end of aluminum pole(s). It seems to cut through up to about a foot of snow to cause an avalanche. In the right conditions it’s pretty quick.
