"It's not Zaphod's but...
equal parts of gin, vodka, bacardi and tequila shaken with ice.
Also known as a Mona Lisa for obvious reasons if you look at the stupid smile of anyone who has drunk one."

Well, you know what they say...

Zaphod plays it safe.

Great reference, guys, even if only a handful of us get it.

But even Zaphod's was like

"being hit on the head by a slice of lemon wrapped around a gold brick"

(I think I got the quote right )

I haven't seen a collector's version, but I heard the original radio programme, saw the stage show in London (which was rubbish!), borrowed Milu's books (which I will return.....one day), and saw the tv series. I think my age is showing again!

the alternative martini (again from aunt sam) was to pour the gin, then open the vermouth bottle, hold the open top near the glass, put your mouth close to the bottle and then gently say the word "whisper". This is her "dry" martini, with a "whisper" of vermouth.

As for margaritas, I have three criteria:

Sauza tequila
NO BLENDER
salt on the rim

Rub a lime around the rim of teh glass and dip in cracked sea salt. Then add Sauza Commemorativo, lime juice, splash of Grand Marnier on the rocks.

Oh yeah!

Wasn't the drink of choice a Ginintonnix?

And I've always wanted a pair of those glasses. Was it the "Peril 2000"? They would black out if something bad was about to happen.

Also, did Mr. Adams pass away in '99?

Todd, I'm pleased I'm not drinking with Sam, that last Martini sounds just a bit too dry for me

Flame me here guys, but I rang up my friends who had done the Martinis I liked and they turned out to be vodka martinis. 50 50 and with an olive. I don't usually drink vodka type drinks but I has having a hell of a good time at the party, so I guess I had no idea what I was drinking.

Don't worry Sarah, although I sitting around drunk, or drinking coka cola to recover from my Martini attempts, the cat is still getting fed

"and saw the tv series. "

The TV series/BBC movie was absolute CRAP. It completely ruined the books for me. Well, almost.

Rumor is, there is going to be a big-budget hollywood version, eventually.

Mr. Adams was working on it (along with a dozen other projects) when he died in... um, 2001 I think it was.

Margarita -

1. Good tequila (no generic labels or plastic bottles)
2. Fresh limes and oranges
3. Ice
4. Bar cup with lid (for shaking)

Squeeze limes (5) and a full orange into the bar cup. Slice one lime and optionally orange into wheels and wedges and set aside. Add 2 oz. tequila and ice to bar cup. Shake (don't forget lid...this gets harder the 4th and 5th time around ). If a salt rim is wanted rub used lime squeeze on rim of your drinking glass and dip glass into salt. Shake mixing cup again and then pour everything directly into glass. Garnish with sliced lime and/or orange.

Do's and Don'ts:
1. Do use good tequila. Life is too short to drink cheap stuff. The better the tequila the better the buzz and less of hangover
2. Don't blend. This waters everything down and ruins the drink.
3. Do use fresh fruit. Avoid bottled lime juices (sweet & sour) unless you are making for a large crowd. Then at least doctor up with fresh fruit.
4. Do use fresh oranges. This is better and cheaper than orange liqueurs (Grand Marnier) and adds less sugar (another hangover component)

Don't be afraid to be creative. Enjoy.

I have it. It's really nice. Says "Don't Panic" in big letters on the front.

I have it as well. When I read it originally, I read my brother's hardcover 'Ultimate' collection (your run-of-the-mill hardcover with dust jacket). When the new version came out about 6-7 years later, he was furious... I told him to just buy the new one and sell the old on Ebay, but I guess he doesn't want to part with the $20. $20 well-spent in my opinion.

This one has the first four books and a fifth one titled 'Young Zaphod Plays It Safe'. I have not read the last one. I also saw a book that was about 15" tall and had pictures of the characters. Don't recall the name. Is that the one that has 'Don't Panic' on the cover?

DonDavis, the one I have looks like yours, but instead of the "MORE THAN COMPLETE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE," it is called the "ULTIMATE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE" and has a SIXTH book called MOSTLY HARMLESS.

I don't mean to imply that I'm better than you, but, well I am.

j/k

whoa, hold on there Buck-a-roo

But, instead of beer, it has to be Gin and Tonic.

And you can see here on the cover it's the 5th in a trilogy. Anything stated incorrectly will remain so forever. Or so said Mr. Adams.

Did you know that his last novel, THE SALMON OF DOUBT was going to be the book that finally brought the Dirk Gently and Hitchhiker books together? Too bad he passed before finishing... the very unfinished novel is available in a book called THE SALMON OF DOUBT which is paradoxically dominated by Mr. Adams's letters and essays. Always the illogical with that man...

Bombay Sapphire into a stainless steel shaker 3/4 full of ice with a few drops of Nouilly Prat dry vermouth. Shake well and pour into a frozen 8 oz. martini glass. Garnish with two large stuffed olives. Drink two and all is right with the world!

LOL, good to see this thread still going. One thing I have learned from Aunty Sam and the PP crew is go light on the vermouth. Don't you just love that Bombay Sapphire, nectar of the Gods I say.
