The Oscars

So, I don’t get it...I have not been to see a movie in a theatre in well over a year, all of the movies I want to see are still not being released (in any form). So why are they having Oscars?

Do the judges get to see every movie privately?
Other than self promotion, trying to “keep current”, and celebrating being a celebrity, what’s the point?

Did they think of the optics?

And the award goes to....”never seen it”

GH85Carrera 04-22-2021 06:41 AM

My interest in the Oscars is right up there (down there) with the interest in Prince Phillip's death. I can't possible rate one above the other, both are just in the do not care at all about it.

I can admire Prince Phillip as a man that seems to be a decent guy. He lived a very long life, and had a staff of servants to do any boring tasks for him. So since he was a decent guy, I might give him a .00001% more importance than the Oscars, Tonys, Emmys, CMT awards or the endless list of the "hand me an award" silly shows.

I rank the Oscars and all award shows equal to all the "sports celebrities" opinions. All they do is plat a game with a ball. My dog can do that.

generally don't watch awards shows but look to them to put movies (or whatever) on my radar. While a bit repulsive in being self-congratulatiory, they are what people make of them.

To this day, I still don't quite understand the difference between Oscars and a Grammy.

:)

I respect the Academy Award. Filmmaking is an art form. The best should recognized. And while there may be some politics involved in certain year's winners, it's generally a reflection of the times in which that art form is exhibited - kinda holds true for all art.

But the ceremony. Naw. Just give me a list of the winners and I'll check out the ones that appeal to me.

Oscars - movies
Grammy - music (named after a gramophone)

Awards shows...all about showing off. "We're beautiful and rich. You're not."

Pretty boring, but they don't ask me. I don't watch these days.

If you've been nominated, have a respectable body of work or have influence you can become "a member of the Academy". This gives you access to "For your consideration" copies of all the films submitted and you vote to include them in their respective categories.

They used to send them out on DVD so if you knew a member you could pretty much watch any film at home, even those currently running in theaters. As you can imagine it got abused regularly, now I think they give you an access code or something to watch them digitally. As a member of the Academy you also can attend the Oscars.

I am friends with 4 of the 5 nominated for Production Design and right now am working with last years winner for "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" (she also won for "Bugsy" back in 1991).

Oh, and no, I don't normally watch the Oscars.

KNS 04-22-2021 10:38 AM

Awards show viewership has been in the tank lately, each one setting a new record for historic low numbers.

Hopefully the Oscars will be so bad they'll seriously consider pulling the plug on airing them at all.

needs more boobies, or maybe that British guy insulting all of the actors and recipients

When I was young, I remember watching things like the Oscars, Grammys and Jerry Lewis' Labor Day Telethon. I don't think I've watch any of those (or the Golden Globes or Country Music Awards or MTV Music Awards...) in many, many, years, probably 30-35 years if I had to take a stab at guessing.

was listening to NPR on the way home. they broke down the oscar nominees by race and gender.

never really talked about the movies.

stevej37 04-22-2021 10:58 AM

It's not really fair to criticize the method used this year.
I'm sure they don't want to skip the entire year....what do you do??

That was key in some rule changes for becoming a member of The Academy recently.

sc_rufctr 04-22-2021 11:17 AM

When was the last time Hollywood made a good movie? ;)

flipper35 04-22-2021 02:03 PM

Hidden Figures comes to mind.

mgatepi 04-22-2021 02:12 PM

I will not watch any award show.....lets see, incredibly over paid people, patting each other on the back, while lecturing to their audience about how good of a person they are.

Now that's entertainment!

Not a member, Went once, with the wifey, wouldn't do it again, eat before you go, you sit for hours and hours as a seat warmer, like in our case to keep the place looking full, a request/suggestion from my employer (my boss was a mouse...). I actually had to rent a newer tux, the one my dad left me was sixty years old and too old for the image, but my employer did reimburse me for the rental.

Cdnone1 04-22-2021 07:47 PM

Hugh did you really go as a seat warmer? I was waiting until I was nominated. I'm still waiting......

I get that, if the purpose is altruistic and to keep the “norm” I can get behind that, but we all know it’s not. I just think it’s strange to have an awards show for movies that people can’t see.

Great movie.

Baz 04-23-2021 07:49 AM

As a movie buff, I'm always interested but have to admit I don't rush out to see the latest movies in the theater. More often than not just wait for them to show up on cable.

Haven't watched the Academy Awards show in a long time.

I remember some of the movies mentioned over the years that took a while before I saw them and thought they were pretty good.

"Yulee's Gold", "Brokeback Mountain", "Crouching Tiger - Hidden Dragon"....."The Life of Pi"......

Lot of good films made every year. And many that were made previously that I will always enjoy.....

livi 04-23-2021 09:37 AM

I am with Tobra.

Only if Ricky Gervais is hosting and only his part. That is however excellent. Well worthy of an Oscar.

stevej37 04-23-2021 09:39 AM

^^^ Billy Crystal couldn't be topped.

yellowperil 04-23-2021 01:14 PM

Started to watch some of the movies up for Oscars, best line so far....."What I wouldn't
give to see that in a tight sweater..." from Mank.

stevej37 04-23-2021 01:18 PM

^^^
ok..I'm lost. Who is Mank? and what movie are you talking about?

Mank is a movie about Herman J. Mankiewicz who wrote the screenplay for Citizen Kane with Orson Welles. Title role is played by Gary Oldman.

stevej37 04-23-2021 01:45 PM

^^^ Thanks...I'll check it out.

How many do you want? It's everywhere. It may not be televised, but it's everywhere.

So, keep trying...and try an industry instead of things like the FFA.
