Does anyone know James & Denise McLean or Rob Becker
Below is an email I received this morning, has anyone else gotten this? Looks like spam to me. I could reply but don't want to get involved in something that could cause me issues later.
From: James Mclean <james.mclean871@gmail.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2021 8:44 AM To: James McLean <james.mclean871@gmail.com> Subject: Buying an early Porsche Greetings, I hope this message finds you well and safe. I'm not sure if I got the correct address. Rob Becker gave me your contact information, he's a PCA's member. I'm looking to buy an air cooled Porsche 356, 911/912. 50's to 80's. A 993/964 would spark my interest as well. Rob thinks you may have or know about a one for sale. Actually, I'm restoring my 1972 BMW 3.0 CS Coupe. Please let me know, I'll not be wasting your time. I'll consider any condition. Sincerely, James & Denise McLean Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right (Garcia/Hunter) |
Probably a real appeal for cars but who knows about the names(?)
There is a constant demand for air-cooled Porsches, they are a commodity of finite supply and almost infinite demand, (at least in relation to their supply in the current market). Dealers have customers who want the cars and no cars to sell them. Just visit BaT to see what's going on right now. Maybe you already know all of this but the short answer is that anyone holding an air-cooled car that they want to sell can easily get top dollar for it on that site, (they will accept your car for auction), and you don't need to mess around with emails from dealers looking to score a deal. |
you google their names?
|
Thanks, yes I did google them but found nothing. I do visit bringatrailer occasionally and that does look like the place to put a car out there.
|
I received a similar letter sometime in the last year. Not sure if the names are
the same.I e-mailed back that I did not know any air cooled cars that were for sale and deleted it. |
every year or so i get a post card that sounds similar. no idea how he got my address. if i can find it out in the garage i’ll check to see if it’s the same guy

Flippers are alive and well these days trying any angle to look like genuine enthusiasts. Posting all over the place looking to slam the next deal. Ads read much like your email, porsche 50s to 80s, but even consider a 964/993.
|
The first line is a generic spam/scam line. In our society, with our social norms do you call, email, or txt someone and say first thing, “I wish you well?” No, you tell them who you are and then why you are calling. You wish them well at the end of the communication.
It doesn’t sound like anyone from the US. |
What "car" guy in his right mind would send out that email and INCLUDE his wife's name in the signature?
Has to be bogus. |
Wording is similar to a newspaper want ad. Flipper hoping for a distressed sale at half price.

Kidding aside, the first Porsche (the 911) brought into our home was for me to drive. If you are a PCA member you can, from their website, search members information. You could always contact Rob Becker through that. |
I get those every year or two. Not a scam but definitely a flipper.

Do you add your husband's name to your emails sent to your girlfriends? :D |
Flippers of any kind are usually not good people, just the opposite IMO.
Best to steer clear. |
I received similar communication last week. Guy calls says XX told me you may have some cars for sale. My guess is it was a broker / dealer or representative of theirs casting the net to see what they can reel in. As others have stated, air cooled are in demand
|
I can think of two "couple friends" that are married, and the husband and wife are always together. When they are spoken of, it is always as a couple. I don't think I have ever seen them individually.

I got the same email today but from Bill Robinson. Actually, Bill and Denise Robinson. billrobinson27@yahoo.com. Fishy, especially since I don't know anybody named Rob Becker, who, supposedly shared my name.
Definitely a scam. |
From this morning. Same email, new name.
