Hey Baz-hose reel?

Looking for a quality hose reel. The eley ones seem really nice, but they are almost $300. Any suggestions?

I hope you don't mind me barging in Greg but I'm so fed up with BS claims of "this hose will never kink!" that along with a proper reel I'd like a reco on a proper hose as well.

Buy from someone that sells rebuild kits for their seals.

That's gonna take one hell of a recoil spring. The only way I can see this working is with a gear reduction and a cordless drill.

LOL. I think he meant recommendation.
It'd take a garage door torsion spring to recoil .

You actually hit on a good idea. The reduction in a GD opener is what I was thinking of. I had one to make a welding positioner but I never got roundtuit.

I can recommend this one Greg. I had another one that sat out in this same location for about 30 years and it finally sun hardened and broke.
This one the handle is taller and the reel feels like it has ball bearings on the axle it is so easy to reel in the hose. I wanted one of those fancy ones but just couldn't justify having that much money tied up into one that would just sit outside all the time.
Goodyear red rubber hose is good too.

Just trying to help out here.

Thanks Scott. Have a similar one now, and they're great if you don't need to move them much. Looking for something that has rubber wheels...

I'm trying to get my brother to send me a pick of his big hose reel. Has a monster big hose on it and big tires. I'll post a pic if/when I get one.

Hi Greg!

I don't use hose reels and don't really have a rec. for you - sorry. I see a lot of them left out with the trash and most are the cheap ones, FWIW.

At my place and at my Mom's, where I help out with maintenance, I have been using expandable hoses. I started using them several years ago when they first came out and the quality wasn't that great - but the new ones they have now are pretty good, when given proper care.

I realize they are not an apples to apples substitute for a conventional garden hose, but I bet in many situations they would do the job just fine and even better when you consider the advantage of not having to unpack and pack the hose each time it's used.

I've found that the 25' lengths work good for most applications. They shrink back up to only about 6-8' when not in use, so I just loop them over a simple hose hanger like this one:

Never a problem with kinking and they are very lightweight and easy to handle. I get mine from Amazon and here is one for around $20. that I recently purchased:

MyM Expandable Garden Water Hose Improved Leak Resistant Heavy Duty Double Latex Core Design Expanding Retractable Flexible and Lightweight for Home Use (25ft)

There are quite a few other brands and models and I always check out the ratings and comments before making a decision on what to buy.

Also - I do have a longer hose that I never roll up. Its about 50-60' long and is an old spray hose I salvaged from a lawn spray truck around 25 years ago. It's got a very thick sidewall and can handle being walked on, unlike other hoses. I use it almost every day here so leaving it laid out suits my situation very practically. I have a circular drive so lot of driveway and room for the hose.

Sorry I don't have any specifics on a hose reel but I know there are quite a few on the market so maybe you can select one based on your needs and any customer ratings posted on the product page.

Please keep us posted on your results as I know it would be of interest to us all.

Good luck!

Thanks. I'd love to use something light, I need 50 ft or more as I have nursery beds etc. I tried the expandable hoses a few years back and they all failed rather quickly at the connector. If they've actually improved, I'll give one a shot.

That's one I've wondered about. Its widely available at TSC or Northern for around $120. Is he happy with it?

He says Yes, but he would use a swivel where the hose connects to the reel fitting. It kinks the hose some since the angle isn't perfect.

Hope this helps. He has a big azz hose on his, gotta be 100 ft at least.

Yes Greg, they really have improved.

Plenty of 50' products available - in fact I keep one in my truck for emergencies. Takes up so little space it's ridiculous!

I don't know if I'll ever go back to a conventional garden hose.

I also use quick connects to swap out from water wands to hose end feeders.

Plant guy here and I insist on efficiency when it comes to this stuff. It's a continual pursuit!

I was using one of the newer expandables at my brother's last week, and the quality improvement from the first Gen of such impressed me. Not so much a gimmick anymore, he's had his for 3 years and it's still in great shape.
