Old friends get together, the same BS?
Vash's thread got me thinking. When old friends get together (friend since grade school who grew up on the same dead end street), we always seem to be BSing about the stupid things we did back in the old days. It seems that we never grow tired of yapping about it since there are over 25-30 years of those years spent together. It can easily goes on all night in front of the camp fire. If any of us start with, "Remember that time we..." One of the wives will roll their eyes and say, "Oh boy, here it goes". We seem to roll right over that comment and keep it going for a few hours. We talk about current things too, but we seem to laugh the most at those golden moments.

We joke about all sorts of stuff. Sometimes the old times, we catch up on where everyone is these days, and we talk about the idiots at our various work places… oh and we talk about our kids.

I moved away from the town I went to H.S. in not long after graduation but am friends with lots of guys I went to H.S. with there. I went to a get together with some of them a few years ago. It was a lot the same as over the decades. Sort of boring to me.

Once or twice per year, a group of us from high school will get together for dinner. Sometimes it's just 6 of us, sometimes 15-20. It turns out to be 3 or 4 hours of ridiculousness. Of course we will laugh about the old days, but once we started a dinner with the funniest ever hour-long conversation about having kids/parenting.

One thing that I have noticed though, is that any cliques that existed back then have gone away now. Everyone is treated as equally welcome in these meals. Everyone is equally supportive of each others' successes and endeavors.

I avoid my high school friends for that very reason. I have zero interest in the past, the good or the bad.

One high school (and beyond) friend will just call me up and ask me if I know what he and his son saw on TV. Most recent was Texas vs. OU, Cotton Bowl 2008.
Went to the game, but retreated to the pavilion after the 1st quarter. Made money selling drink coupons at half time, (long lines), and got loaded for free. Good time.

People who have never left their HS area seem most susceptible to having never left high school mentality.

me and my bud Larry. we rarely talk about he past. there is so much new chit going on that fills the conversation. we do the occasional reminiscing, but we cant help it. we made a bomb when we were 11. a big one. that has to come up every once in a while.
HS sucked for me. it is not part of my consciousness anymore.

HS sucked for me and all of us too, Vash. Its the siht we did outside of HS. We never really talked about stuff that happened in school but the craps we pulled like racing our cars and ended up in the ditch of Angeles Hwy at 2am. Shooting at the street light until it fell but only to hit the ice-cream truck. That kind of useless crap.

I don't really socialize that much except when I run into someone I know around town - which happens often enough. I went to my 20 year HS reunion back in '92 and that was enough. I have two yearbooks with a ton of pics cool stuff written in it if I want to re-visit those years.
Mostly when I talk to my buddies now we talk about surfing or cars or the crap going on here in town - like when they add another freaking stop sign that is totally un-necessary.

HS was just a bus stop in my life...I didn't hate it or love it but I knew it was on the schedule and I had to do well to get to the next bus stop.
I have three great friends from that era, HS: - Ten years in we laughed about drinking and pussy, mostly college. If you went to college in the late 70's, early 80's, as a man or woman, you'll understand. - Fifteen years in we laughed about our significant others...our families, the weight, which they all gladly shouldered. I was still single, but I knew if these idiots could pull it off, I was golden. - Twenty-five years in it all shifts Trust me, success is not about your career, it becomes about the children. Now, forty years in? We talk about the family, children, grandchildren, then we talk about the pussy we got in HS and college.

The very first porno mag that I ever saw...was found in the ditch of the road. Black and white mag from the early 60's.
I gave it to a friend...he gave it to another......

My best friend, best man, I met in college. Yes we still BS about the past, lots of drinks and air gasping laughter as our wives put up with it. Genuine love between us that I hold near and dear. We will never jeopardize it because we both recognize and respect how we have grown into different people with different ideas of the future. I would lay down in traffic for him, even though he voted one ticket, and I know he would for me for voting the other. So yes the wives are in play now and get along fine too. They appear to love our wild stories and enjoy the full company. Life is hard enough, don't need to cloud or complicate it with stuff that does not really matter. Best, David |

the very few friends i had from HS i lost touch with over 30 years ago and never saw again. they moved. i moved. i moved back. whatever. my best friends are from college. whenever we talk or see each other, which is very rare, it’s always the same….”remember when…blah blah”. probably because we live apart all these years…makes me wonder if we are really friends at all, if that’s all we can talk about. the few friends i have from law school are different, i think, because we have similar careers we can talk about
basically i haven’t hung out with friends since the 90s. i’m fine with that. if i can say anything about myself that’s accurate, it’s that i’ve never ever been lonely and i’ve never been bored. best survival skills ever
