And the Ensign, well, she's now an Lt JG, and here's the text I got from her the other day: "3,264 days down, 29 to go." She had a good ride, always top-ranked, but marriage and family now appear to be higher ranked for her. She did her duty and she did it quite well - now on to the next chapter of her life. (And from what I understand, even when you're out, you're never out. Hell, she's marrying another DDG officer... Go figure!)

Thanks for asking!

She's been in that long? It was only yesterday when she went into the Academy.

Analysis of the garage area from the video that was made in July of 2020. This guy breaks it down and shows lots of things in that garage area that are just wrong.

Interesting. He thinks the root cause was the pool deck failure in front of the building columns that appeared to fail first in the building collapse. If true, it really makes you think about how something that's not holding up the building per se could still cause a catastrophic failure of the building.

They found a cat alive!

Yes, Binks the cat apparently has used a life. They found him around the rubble after the rest of the building was demolished and he has been reunited with his family.

Like a domino effect.

This guy also explains things well and throws some attention to not only all the badness of the garage ceiling, but points out some pretty major cracks in the garage floor near that entry ramp area.

Pretty chilling to hear some of these 911 calls as the building was collapsing.

Well, when you load structural members in a direction in which they were never supposed to be loaded, bad things can happen. Columns are designed to take longitudinal (vertical) forces, when you push one sideways hard enough, bad things can happen.

The biggest problem this place had was the water migration into the slab for the upper parking deck at the ground level, differential settlement may have also played a role. They waited far too long to address the problems in that slab.

This one talks about how those columns punched through the pool deck.

I suppose you could say, quite accurately, that the building simply rotted away and fell down.

If anything good results from this tragedy, it will be higher standards of inspection.
(I'm sure cities will be more proactive in the future)
But when a quorum of owners decide against preventative maintenance, when does the responsibility shift?

Cars from the collapse. Not a big fan of the music myself so, I turn the volume down.
I didn't see the Supra.

We can all hope lots of changes in inspections and laws. The problem will be finding a good inspector. They will need a system of professional licensees for the inspectors, and professional malpractice and a bond, like professional surveyors or architects have now.

Ultimately, people of the state of Florida and the legislature will have to figure it all out. We all know politics will be involved, and it will take many years. I am glad I don't have to figure it out. It will be a complex and thorny issue.

More like a surveyor. Inspectors know the building code and most of them are quite good at citing the codes. They are not trained nor required to be engineers.
