When I worked on the main steam turbines of the US Navy nuclear ships now and then we had hammer just like that to bang on the special slugging wrenches we used to break the nuts that held the main steam throttle blocks down. The hammer handles were about half the length of that one and busting them loose was a dangerous job.
We were pulling the throttle valves of the main ship's service turbine generator and I had assigned an MM1 named Steve and two trainees to bust the nuts loose. Steve had one of the trainees stand on the slugging wrench on the nut and he tried to break it loose. Steve wasn't very strong and the other trainee said "let me have a whack at it" so Steve said okay wiseas*! The trainee jumped up on the ladder, took aim and let the hammer fly. Unfortunately he had swung it from over his shoulder, past his ear and bong.....it hit the wrench and flew right back and nailed him right in the middle of the forehead!!!!! He was out like a busted light bulb. He had to spend a couple days in the hospital and nobody wanted to have him work with them after that. John |
