This is crazy ! Can't get tires

Went to my local tire shop on 8/26 looking to buy four tires for my dually . Settled on Yokohama Geolander A/T in size 235/85x16 . While the guy was typing up the order the inventory vanished from their distributor ☹️ . Ok I am not in a rush let's order them . I called a few minutes ago to get status , there are NONE in the country with no ETA on replenishment stock !!! I like those tires but may have to look around if other tire dealers might have that size available . Pretty crazy .

Tires, brakes, and washer fluid are the latest in the great shortages of 2021. This world has gone stark raving mad .

ted 09-09-2021 07:48 AM

It's been a problem in racing for the entire pandemic.
Slicks are going to the professional race series leaving little for the amateur racers.
Prices have increased 10% too.

drcoastline 09-09-2021 07:49 AM

Be ready for this across the board, supply chain is breaking down, inflation is going to go way up, this is going to go way past toilet paper.

cabmandone 09-09-2021 07:52 AM

Yep. Certain brands and sizes are "unobtanium"

I just got a smokin deal on some BFG TKO2's for my son's Rav and a decent deal on some Goodyear Assurance Weatherready for my daughter's Mazda3. The TKO's I bought online. The Goodyear from a local tire store.

Did you try Discount? I did a quick search near you and the site says available 1-5 days.

I know it'll say whatever, but just checking. SmileWavy

My company makes go karts and amusements for fun centers. We are back ordered over 20k go kart tires right now. Some of our customers have been closed all season due to lack of product to keep business running. Honda engines and parts are hard to come by too.

I don’t think that the website is accurate. I had to settle on my fourth option for my Jeep. Everything else was three months out.

masraum 09-09-2021 08:39 AM

Yes, if you're looking for specific tires, you may be screwed. This is the time when it would be good to just be happy to run whatever crap they had in stock (which is probably rarely what most of us want).

pwd72s 09-09-2021 10:02 AM

soon enough we'll be hearing of five year plans...

This is where a lot of the problem lies, I think.
There are a lot of container ships just waiting to unload. This is just a small number seen off Huntington Beach last month, and there are more out there today.

Screw 'em. Buy Predators.

I am currently trying to get shoes for my Grand Cherokee SRT, with absolutely no luck. Everybody is only ordering winter tires i am told, so unless i want to spend an extra 300 bucks shipping them all over I am SOL.

A first for me.

The website of a major supplier to the air-cooled VW world is full of disclaimers and warnings about long delays and part shortages. They're practically telling customers not to bother ordering anything if you're not willing to wait forever to get it.

I've been using General tires for years and have found them to be quite good. They perform well, are durable & quiet running, and are reasonably priced.

Tire Rack had the tires I use in stock.
Continental.

I run Grabber ATX on my F250. They have an aggressive tread pattern like the BFG TKO2's but cost less and don't add a lot of road noise.

fastfredracing 09-09-2021 02:42 PM

My tire distributor just left . He says that the talk in the industry is, that , we cannot produce enough tires domestically , and need the import tires to fill in the gaps.
The tarriff put on rubber products coming in from the orient , makes a container of tires ( approx 500-600 tires ) cost 12k more . Domestic distributors, are not purchasing the off brand tires in the volumes they were before this , and the supply dwindles .

Same here. I think they are better than BFG's the last ones i had dried out and cracked and got very choppy. The Generals are almost bald now but have performed great the whole time

We've all lived through Peak Civilization. It's all down hill from here.

Ohhhh the outrage.
The whining angst of spoiled brats with a silver spoon stuck up their azzes. Welcome to the real world. It has just started.

I knew in the 80s that there would come a day when there wouldnt be 10 brands of peas on the grocery shelf but one or two brands..the rest would go by the way side..

We are finding out just how fragile those just in time supply chains really are. There is a bit of modern innovation that just had a blow back.

One of my analogies for the last 10 has been what if that chip maker in Malyasia goes out of biz and you cant get the chip your car needs anymore..i see horses and buggy whips making a big comeback

I didnt know anybody was listening.

I told Nostatic in 2010 about a new Dark Ages, he replied take a chill pill..

Crap I just put the BFG’s on my jeep. Another good thing about the ATX is that it runs true to size unlike the KO2 which is a full inch shorter than it’s advertised height.

drcoastline 09-09-2021 05:25 PM

This is interesting. It just popped up on my Youtube

+930

For months, we’ve run into supply chain issues. No appliances, toilets, tile, wood flooring, windows, cabinets, etc. What had a 2 week lead time, is now 3 plus months.

And what was once 3 months is now "you might get it next summer". I've been talking with friends at dealers selling new construction equipment. I was told the other day that if someone wants a new Yanmar excavator, they'll have to wait until next summer to get it. Same goes for other brands. It's a bold new world we're in right now.

VINMAN 09-09-2021 05:48 PM

Ordered vinyl siding for a job, 3 weeks ago.

Projected delivery ..... 4th week of Nov.....

Trex decking.... 10 to 12 weeks...

kach22i 09-09-2021 06:43 PM

I put General G-MAX AS-05's on my Porsche and Infiniti G37X, great tires.

Yea, took 2-weeks to get them but worth the wait (Discount Tire).

Countries they came from;

Germany
France
USA
Portugal

Yeah, they're great tires. Have them on both my 600 MB's . Only issue is that one set thumps if they sit for a while, but it goes away in 10 miles. Otherwise as nice as the DSW Conti's they replaced.

I've been going between the Gmax and the Conti Extreme Contact. I'll have to give the Gmax another look.

Thought for the day as we talk about tire shortages
"My old man's spare tires were only actually tires in the academic sense. They were round and had once been made of rubber."

Have a great Friday everyone!

craigster59 09-10-2021 06:48 AM

I've had BFG KO2's on my trucks. They are backordered right now. I called my tire guy and he said if you can limp along a little bit longer things will be back in stock soon.

Found some General ATX blackwalls on Tire Rack and ordered them. There's a $100 rebate, cheaper than KO2's and who knows what the future holds with the new mandates handed down.

Instrument 41 09-10-2021 07:30 AM

I put set of those Geolanders on our Suburban a few years back. I got about 35K miles snd then they went to crap. Never again.

Joe Bob 09-10-2021 08:13 AM

255/50/19, Tire Rack to my installer. Delivery Tuesday.

Good luck on your search.
