What happens to a poodle if you don’t do the foo foo coiffure?

A chick magnet for all the wrong reasons is what I don’t want.

Years ago, the neighbor had a male standard poodle.
If anyone walked into their yard...that dog attached itself to the persons leg...and went to town!

Crossing to Poodles seems to be the big trend lately. They seem to outnumber the OEM Poodle by several to one. I can see why- the coat isn't my favorite. It'll be years, but I'd love to get a Mini Bernedoodle. There would be some serious magnetic forces at play here. Big bucks, I'm sure, too.

We had three cats that were similar. When we left the house they would don their leather jackets and smoke cigarettes.

Not all of them. Our long haired dachshund hasn't had a haircut in years, and also doesn't really shed. We used to give him haircuts in the summer when he was more active, but now that he's old and less active, we don't bother other than to keep his paws and a couple of other spots trimmed for hygiene purposes.

But then our dachshund is a mini, so not really applicable to the OP.

My understanding is dogs with hair shed a lot less than dogs with fur. All dogs shed at least a little, but some are generalized as non-shedding. The more a dog sheds, the more it can aggravate allergies. I never have to vacuum much, as my dogs are considered non-shedders (but they do a little). On my dogs, the hair keeps growing and they need a haircut after a while. Worth it for me vs constantly vacuuming the house. There's a cool picture of a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier in this link, that I always wanted to try. Obviously, several criteria to be looking for as well. Not so sure how you evaluate a rescue- I'm sure a DNA test is possible.

A Lhasa/Poodle mix checks all those boxes. Their coat is hair, not fur. No shedding at all.

There is a dog on the beach most mornings called Frankie. Life is a rolling party for Frankie. She meets and greets every dog and every person coming the other way. She is a Noodle (Spoodle?). My Border Terriers love Frankie because she's so much fun.

If I took a pic of Frankie, I'd be tempted to take a pic of the lady who owns Frankie, and that may get me into trouble.

Another Pug vote here. Really great personalities and temperament.

backup votes for Golden Retriever, and Bernese Mountain Dog (but they don't live too long)

I just typed Calgary into petfinder. A ton of awesome dogs. We should confine our reccomendations to there.

My 10yo Puggle sheds enormous amounts of hair. Same with the cat.
Vacuum and washer and drier filters are a task.

We got mom a 10yo mini poodle who was raised right and previously owned by an old lady.

Perfect girl:
Small and portable. No accidents since after the first introductory pee indoors which was quickly corrected. No shedding. Smells nice. Doesn't bark usually but is protective. Loves to frisk and run around and explore with an innocent stupid dog face look, but is actually very smart after a bit of time. Her personality rubbed off on my pup.

Downsides:
Pesky with no sense of barrier when it comes to food and other dogs. Very dependent on human affection and constantly wants to be in the lap. Hair coat grows slowly and pink skin is vulnerable to hot summer sun. Hair grows over eyes. Needs brushing which she loves.
