is it Yeti or bust?
 

Been looking at the new super type coolers and as i've seen 1st hand with friends that have them it's seems to be the Yeti and everything else. Although I've not seen many of the knocks offs in the flesh so I've been unable to ask about performance/satisfaction. I'm looking at a 30 to 40 qt. unit, but to this point have not been able to bring myself to spend $400 on a cooler for the Yeti. Many of the knock offs claim 5 days, and I don't believe that, nor need that long of stretch prolly only needing 2, maybe 3.5 days on jeep overlanding excursions.

with that said have any of you found a Yeti knock off that is any good? Finding weight, outside v. inside dimensions differing greatly with a ton of options that are decently reviewed at 1/2 the cost but thought id check here. The Yeti's all get 5 star reviews, but after spending that kind of money for something like a cooler can influence one's perception greatly, I know they are the best, but I'm cheap...

RTIC may be cheaper and give you the same long lasting cold. I don't have one, I have a small Yeti, but sometimes it's brand hype...

Pelican is pretty good. I think a Pelican Elite cooler might be what you're looking for. Blue Cooler is sort of disappointing.

Yet is good because of the different models offering different features. The Yeti Roadie is my go to for everyday stuff.

For years, I saw the word yeti on the back of trucks. I finally googled it and realized it was for expensive coolers.

I have the RTIC in just about every size. My brother only has Yeti’s. The difference? I have more money.

Another vote for RTIC. The one that I have works really well.

OtterBox coolers are a Yeti competitor. I looked at them and they looked very nice. Wife got me a Yeti as a gift so never got the Otterbox. If I had not received the Yeti as a gift I probably would have gone with the OtterBox.

I have a cheaper than Yeti knock-off.
It irks me that a cooler could cost that much.

about 1/2 the price.
With thoughtful packing, you can easily have
5 or more days of ice.

I keep it full of frozen steaks, seafood,
and frozen 16oz waterbottles. Only open it
when retrieving food.

Soft drinks, hard drinks, snacks all go into
a separate cooler, to preserve the deep cool
in my Fake YETI.

The frozen water bottles can be extended
with a block of dry-ice for longer excursions.

WORKS WELL!

Porsche has a small, overpriced accessory 12v cooler. With the Porsche tax (Porsche logo) it is priced like a Yeti. One came with my Cayenne.

After watching many YouTube reviews, I decided on a Walmart Lifetime cooler. It’s way cheaper than the Yeti and keeps ice for two days. The main downside is it’s weight and size. I’ve moved on to an RV fridge called Iceco 53 qt. That sucker stays ice cold as long as it’s powered. I plug it into the cigarette lighter adapter while I’m driving then into my Jackery at the campsite.

Have a yeti bag cooler that looks kinda like a tote. The value is in how rugged it is. Gets thrown all over the place in trucks, boats, etc.

Have an RTIC hard cooler and like that it doesn’t slide around and makes an awesome seat.

Not sure either holds ice longer than igloo or whatever cheap brand. RTIC hard cooler feels nearly identical to yetis. Yeti has much neater colors.

I DO find the yeti cups hold ice very well and have the best quality lid.

I'd have to win the lottery first before I spent $400 bucks on a cooler .... hasn't happened Yeti :D.

If anyone should know about yeti's, it'd be a bunch of vette owners-:D

I have one of these that a Franklin BBQ brisket was shipped in. With stuff pulled from the fridge, it keeps ice as ice for 2 days with only minor melting, haven't used it beyond that but would probably go to three.

I’ve got a small Colman extreme marine, was $60 at cabellas, it’s fine. Had it 4-5 years and it’s much better than my previous cheap plastic coolers for casually transporting stuff that must stay frozen. Tight fitting lid and seal, thick walls, sturdy. If I cared about freezing for days then I’d want weeks and would get a 12v arb freezer. Where would I get ice and why would I want to? You want to be elite get a powered freezer not a high end dinosaur.

I’ve got friends with these expensive branded coolers, used them and still fail to see the point. The marginal gains are lost the first time you pop that lid.The whole market niche for high end coolers seems insane to me. Pretty sure it is yet another group think pathology.

Coolers and refrigeration are a very pure science and thermodynamics doesn’t forgive, increase in spending gets very marginal gains.

I purchased a Cordova cooler, probably in the same price range as a Yeti, I have no idea, I did not want a Yeti for reasons.

Made in America was important to me. This tics that box.

I have about 12 different coolers of varying sizes. Including a few Igloo and Rubbermaid marine coolers that are close to 20 yrs old. They will hold ice for four days in 90 degree direct sun weather with no issues. Even new today, they cost a fraction of what a YETI cost.

I have an RTIC that was given to me as a gift. Its works great but just like a YETI, the internal storage size is tiny compared to the size of the cooler. A big negative. It holds ice no better than my Igloos.

To me the YETI is just another one of those overpriced bragging status symbols.

When I attended Burning Man in 2019, the group I went with have been going 14 years.

They have a whole system of coolers to keep all the food stored. We ate steaks, salmon, burgers, chicken, you name it.

There were 3 Yetis and 2 Coleman. It was the first time I'd been around Yeti, and hearing them recount their years of trial and error, they proclaimed the Yeti superior.

After using them up close, I could certainly see the difference.

Then, a couple I know that camps a lot got one. They also really like theirs.

I also think that some of the more traditional makers (like igloo) have started making more yeti-like models (but cheaper) to compete.

I just bought a RTIC soft cooler to hopefully use as a check-on bag for frozen venison Shipping was fast! I try it out in a few weeks.

My main cooler is a cheap Igloo. I’ve spent so much $ on replacing hinges and latches. They break so easily.

RTIC factory is about 5 miles from here and the Igloo factory is about 20 miles from here.

The oil patch technical association that I chair used to provide very nice custom engraved Yeti mugs as speakers gifts to those who spoke at our technical sessions. Then one of our members pointed out Yeti’s anti pipeline and anti oil patch stance… which is interesting because every one of their products has some component made from plastic which is generally a petrochemical product…

We no longer give out YETI brand mugs.

I like their products, but can’t support a company that chooses to degrade the industry that feeds my family.

How often do u use it? How rugged does it need to be.

All it seems are gona give about the same amount of chill for about the same length of time..The competitors are getting better. they had to.

The branding implys...If is says YETI it is the best..no need to look further

Question do you need to have the Logo that implys it is the best? And do you need the best brand for the circumstances that you are going to use it for?

Me thinks that the YETI is gona sit on the shelf in the GHAYrage more than it is going to be used..so every time you walk past it, you can smile and say I gots the best money can buy.

Mt thinking is that, buy the cheaper one because of the amount of use it is going to get....AND deploy the saved money on a higher end brand of something you are going to use everyday. For instance for me it would be an Espresso maker which I use each and evey day. There it ,makes a material diff.

Yeti or bust is not a legitimate question because if you buy Yeti you also go bust.

With this crowd that logic will get you as far as trying to sell a Yeti to an Eskimo..

I have several coolers as well. Two of which are a Yeti and a steel clad Coleman from REI. The Yeti is almost twice the size yet the inside cubic foot capacity is the same. They both hold ice for about the same number of days. So close that it's an insignificant difference. The Coleman takes up half the space in the truck and is less cumbersome so the Yeti stays on the deck to keep drinks cold.
