Nope, especially if I had to walk back in to get it. In this day and age where many people have decided they don’t even need to come into work, I would have zero problem leaving the quarter (or more) to the cashier.

I hardly ever go into a gas/convenience store to pay (that's what they want you to do, so you'll buy drinks, and snacks). When the outside readers don't work, I leave, and find someplace else.

Exactly that. On a few occasions on road trips we stop at a place my wife has deemed good enough to likely have a decent bathroom, I pump the gas, she goes off to the bathroom. If the pump reader is not functional, I have to go inside to pay. There always seem to be a line of math impaired fools buying lottery ticket and cigarettes. It takes several minutes standing in line to have the honor of paying for the gas before I get to pee.

In town, no way in hell will I go inside to pay. If pay at the pump is not working, there are always other places to get gas.

My 911 is 37 years old, 182,000 miles my daily driver is 36 years old with 375,000 miles. If I ever wear one of them out I might get an electric car. Either car can be repaid over and over and never ever need a laptop to hook up, or advanced diagnosis from the dealership. Just analog tools to repair them. I remember cigs for 25 cents...but we didn't have any of the candy you mention.
We would usually go for penny candy or a slo-poke.
