It’s only $.25….

MrsRocket had to get gas the other day and the card reader would not read her card. It said see the cashier. So she went in and talked to the cashier and agreed on $50 on her car to fill up the Tahoe.

She squeezed in $49.75. She went in to talk to the cashier and said I want my change/$.25 back. The cashier was surprised she wanted a quarter back and several people there agreed, saying it’s just a quarter!

Would you blow it off or would you go get your $.25

Edit: I never pay in advance on my card and fill up for this reason.

masraum 01-16-2022 12:33 PM

I wouldn't have paid in advance. If the reader doesn't work, I leave and go somewhere else.

It would probably depend on my mood if I was stuck in that situation whether I went to get the quarter or not.

But if I wanted my quarter, then you'd damn well better give me a quarter. If it's "just a quarter" and no big deal, then reach into your own damn pocket and give me one of yours. You know the cashier was thinking, "what a pain in the ass, I don't want to go through the hassle of the paperwork for a quarter." If it was the cashier wanting a quarter, you can bet your ass they'd be screaming to get their quarter back.

Jims5543 01-16-2022 12:34 PM

I leave and go somewhere else as well.

In my younger years i would have just pumped it into the trash can if they're gonna be jerks. Now i would demand my quarter and hope i got a cool year.

When society is rounding up everything and people are like "oh okay, I'm a dumbazz". Yes it adds up. Quarter here. Dollar there. Americans.... lol

stevej37 01-16-2022 12:50 PM

Tell the cashier that you will use the quarter for a lotto ticket. When she asks for the additional 75 cents..tell her to put it on your bill.

A930Rocket 01-16-2022 12:54 PM

I agree with the above. I would have changed pumps, as I’ve had this happen before.

Depending on the price of gas and how full my tank is, I would probably ask for $25 to get me somewhere later on, where I could fill it up to fall.

asphaltgambler 01-16-2022 01:04 PM

Yes, similar issues with debit cards at the pump in some stations I used to frequent. So it either their readers need replaced or updated, OR the processing costs are higher VS CC. Obviously money / profit driven

Steve Carlton 01-16-2022 01:05 PM

Isn't the card authorized up to $50, but you get billed for what was pumped, in this case $49.75?

javadog 01-16-2022 01:10 PM

No, she pre-paid it.

biosurfer1 01-16-2022 01:15 PM

Must be some crazy old system at that station. If I prepay and there is money left over, the place I go to it literally takes 3 seconds to get change. They type the pump number and the drawer opens with a read out of how much change is due.

Steve Carlton 01-16-2022 01:17 PM

Then IMO it's the principle rather than the amount. If I asked for the quarter, I'd expect to receive it promptly without question.

Por_sha911 01-16-2022 02:36 PM

I would have asked the cashier "If I pump $50.25, can I just give you $50.00 and say 'its only a quarter' "?

I wonder if the cashier is making extra money on this?

IS300 01-16-2022 02:42 PM

Money is Money.... I pick up change on the ground.... I would get the .25 back too
Its the principal

Zeke 01-16-2022 03:17 PM

I can see where credit/debit in — cash back is a problem.

I too had a funky reader on a pump and the guy on the next aisle was having a fit, so I left. Considering the 2 miles I drove to the next station and the time, I thought my thin patience got the best of me.

A930Rocket 01-16-2022 03:23 PM

It was a shady gas station on the right side coming home for work today. I always fill up at the Parkers across the street. It’s nice and clean.

I'm so old I remember when a taco was $.25, so when I think of that quarter, I see a taco.

Or a pack of cigs.
(or a gal of gas)

Evans, Marv 01-16-2022 03:41 PM

At the time that taco was a quarter, cigs & gas were less than that.

stevej37 01-16-2022 03:43 PM

We didn't have tacos at that time.

I was prob a senior in HS before I ever learned/heard what a taco was.

You must not be close to the south west.

stevej37 01-16-2022 04:05 PM

early 70's in Michigan. Nope.

rwest 01-16-2022 04:07 PM

Nope, especially if I had to walk back in to get it. In this day and age where many people have decided they don’t even need to come into work, I would have zero problem leaving the quarter (or more) to the cashier.

nzporsche944s2 01-16-2022 04:08 PM

What if it had been the other way around? She paid $50 but somehow got $50.25 - would the gas station forgive the 0.25? I highly doubt it

Money is money. She was owed her change

stevej37 01-16-2022 04:09 PM

No mention of how hot the cashier was. Makes a big diff.

Are you asking the man to commit marital suicide?

stevej37 01-16-2022 04:57 PM

It might have been a hot day and the cashier recognized Mrs Rocket from her high school gym class. Memories of sweaty skin and her small attire. Then she was spurned......

I’ve been to that gas station, believe me, you don’t want pictures.

drcoastline 01-16-2022 08:54 PM

Time permitting, I get my quarter.

ckelly78z 01-17-2022 03:45 AM

I hardly ever go into a gas/convenience store to pay (that's what they want you to do, so you'll buy drinks, and snacks). When the outside readers don't work, I leave, and find someplace else.

Exactly that. On a few occasions on road trips we stop at a place my wife has deemed good enough to likely have a decent bathroom, I pump the gas, she goes off to the bathroom. If the pump reader is not functional, I have to go inside to pay. There always seem to be a line of math impaired fools buying lottery ticket and cigarettes. It takes several minutes standing in line to have the honor of paying for the gas before I get to pee.

In town, no way in hell will I go inside to pay. If pay at the pump is not working, there are always other places to get gas.

You guys need EVs…

FPB111 01-17-2022 09:13 AM

My grandfather would give me 0.25 to go to “Ziggies” corner store to get a pack of Camels or Lucky Strikes no filters. I would also get .05 of gummy worms, red hats or lickum sticks.
Does that date me?

My 911 is 37 years old, 182,000 miles my daily driver is 36 years old with 375,000 miles. If I ever wear one of them out I might get an electric car. Either car can be repaid over and over and never ever need a laptop to hook up, or advanced diagnosis from the dealership. Just analog tools to repair them. BOTH have increased in appraised value over the years.

stevej37 01-17-2022 09:17 AM

^^^FPB
I remember cigs for 25 cents...but we didn't have any of the candy you mention.
We would usually go for penny candy or a slo-poke.
