It's all about the destination--I need a purpose.

With work, I'm given projects or teams to fix. Once I've got them running smoothly, I'm bored and it's time to fix the next problem. I can't sit idly, coasting with what's been fixed.

At home, it's project driven. Updates, upgrades, yard beautification...always something. Once the house is "done," I've told the wife I want to sit back and enjoy it...but the truth is I'm "almost done" and already wondering what's next (next house, probably...).

I don't know how to just enjoy the journey. Sometimes, I realize that might be a problem.

I am such an underachiever. I have had such wonderful luck having life's delights come to me.
I will put together small projects, our house, the barn and the garage, but I have never set a" Life Goal ". I am never motivated by big things.

If we were all the same, life wouldn't be as interesting.

Best

Agreed. My life goal is to enjoy life and be happy.

Too much stress interferes with my life goal so making a bazillion dollars or having too much of my new worth invested in my house is not a life goal for me. Saving enough to retire is a goal but as long as you make saving automatic, there's no stress involved.

I do get stress at work which is running a turbine and pump repair shop but then I remember what my old boss always told me: "it's just iron"

I hear you and I know exactly what you are talking about.

I probably did not work as hard as you but I recognized those sacrifices would keep me as a member in good standing in the club. The club of those protected.

The good old days when you could eat shiet and it was worth it.

This reminds me of a fantastic Peter Egan column in R$T back in the 80's.

The column summarized a point in time when Egan was in a parking lot with his Formula Ford, trailer and the clapped out tow vehicle of the year. He was having a casual conversation with a stranger who pulled up in an obviously new high-end car and was interested in the FF.

Cliff notes - The guy says I wish I had the money to go racing like that. Always wanted to try it out. Egan said something nice and something about how racing was worth the sacrifice to him and walked away.

The remainder of the column was focused on how for the money spent on the guy's new car. He could have had a nice used Formula Ford, the trailer, tow vehicle, and two years of racing expenses at the SCCA amateur level. Sure the racing is more expensive now, but so is the price of a new sports car.

I'm sure I could have much more at this time in my life had I made other choices at younger ages. But I'd also have missed out on some of the best experiences of my life.

The title of that column............... Doing Beats Having..........

I'm both,

Outside of work it's all about the journey, ideal holidays are driving, touring holidays, always excited to see what's around the next corner with quick stops along the way.

I relax by doing stuff not sitting around looking at stuff I've done

With work it's all about the destination or achieving an end goal, save 'x' amount of weight, design/build by a fixed, immoveable race date, try to win races and championships, have no interest in just competing, it's win or fail

In the final flashbacks of life, moments before death, I can only imagine the journeys and destinations will all blend.

An ever quickening spiral of memories.

It will all be flashbacks of a journey (from your own life) (into bliss) into.....(insert your own personal affiliation here).

(key moment being- in the end- the destinations were only mileposts along the flashbacks of the journey)

Happiness is the journey, not the destination.

Hwy 1 north to Carmel (Tickle Pink Inn) or Sausalito (Inn Above the Tides). Not a bad road mid-week and fabulous venues for the view & food.

Then there's hell as described by Gary Larson. The 405 freeway at rush hour following an out-of-tune 454 Chev truck with a rusty camper shell with the left blinker stuck on, on the way to Hawthorne, for no good reason.

Gary must have written that book a long time ago because the 405 is bumper to bumper all hours of the day now including weekends. Rush hour, what's that?
