Here's my simple test. Throw a tennis ball. If she brings it back, she's mostly lab. If she chases it, and either leaves it where it is, or picks it up and runs around wanting you to chase her, mostly hound. Another trait our hound exhibits is when you take her for a walk, the nose is on the ground and the tail is up in the air, curled back similar to a parenthesis. When she senses something she doesn't like, there's a little patch of hair on her back that bristles up. If she catches a scent, she's gone, she won't listen to either of us.

The neighbor has a lab / Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. He gets the whole ridge down his back when he gets excited.

Could ya post a pic of your girl? We would like to see if she passes the "I have hound dawg ears" test ;). My Moka's nationally recognized breeder was very scientific in his methods, insisting that his pups be picked up on day 49 (when puppies truly "wake up" and begin to learn their world), based upon scientific studies. She was amazing to watch from the day I brought her home.... nose to ground learning her new world. By day 52 she had explored my whole back yard with her nose never leaving the ground :). He bred champion athletes, but many also became drug sniffers and rescue search dogs. She doesn't have hound dawg ears .... but she has the nose :)

I was sitting on someone's couch one day when a visitor showed up with what appeared to me to be a Lab. The dog proceeded to get on the couch next to me, placed her head on my knee and went asleep. Obviously not a Lab. A hound, I was told. Sweet dog. She did not have the huge long droopy ears or the big face of a bloodhound.

Got a fresh 16 inches of snow a few days back…and Lena loves it! Here are a few iPhone photos:

Here's my funny hound story. We were supposed to watch the granddaughter one weekend in October. But we had a wedding to attend on that Friday night, so my stepdaughter dropped off the baby with my sister-in-law. When my wife stopped to pick up the granddaughter that Saturday morning, my sister-in-law's little dachshund started barking at her, he didn't want her to have the baby. We went over to their house on Christmas eve, and he started growling and barking at my wife again, because that was the lady who took the baby. I called him off her, went over to the couch, and he jumped in my lap and went to sleep.

It's tough seeing a black dog in white snow, but from what I can make out from the photos, I don't see any hound in her. Our hound had giant bat ears at 6 months, and she's now grown into them. We had a Lab - GSP before her, she looked like a lab except she had a white heart on her chest. I miss that dog.

Once Lena is out of the snow, what markings does she have? Or is she all black?

What ever she is, she sure is cute! Plotting to win your heart maybe?

My black Lab Nat - late in his years but still good with a ball.

The Numbers Are In!

So…Lena is 45.7% Labrador, 14.7 Plott Hound, 11.8 Yorkshire Terrier, 7.7 Golden Retriever, 6.0 German Shepherd, and 14.1% “Supermutt,” which basically means a mishmash of lots of other breeds, among these likely being Pit Bull, Chihuahua, and Chow Chow.

Talk about multiple personalities! But we’re glad she’s mostly lab, and at the end of the day, Lena will just be….Lena!

That's awesome! I was gonna guess 57.24% Lab :D. My niece was showing me her two mutt's results over the Christmas holidays .... both had a similar healthy mix in them.

I wonder what my pure bred Lab (AKC registered with champion lineage) would result? Not really .... all of us dogs are mutts in reality :D

Very cool!

Bill Douglas 02-08-2022 02:14 PM

His genetics are too good, and he's too handsome, to call Muttley.

We had two pure bred labs. One would do whatever you were doing. Go play, she would play. Sit down, she would rest her head on your lap. Go get the mail and get attacked by a dog, she would defend. Throw a ball or frisbee and she would catch it, run a lap around the house and bring it to you, She was an awesome hunter and would bring the ground squirrels, possums and pigeons to us for treats. She was from the English line I believe. Smartest dog I ever had, and I had a beagle/sheltie mix that could unhook a chain clipped on his collar.

The second was pure energy and would fetch until she got hot and then go dip in her pool, completely under water, and then come back for more. She was NOT one to rest her head n you. She was NOT the smartest dog, but she had a nose on her, Probably because she was born blind, but they did save one eye and she had lens replacement and could mostly see after that. I think I heard her bark 4 or 5 times while we had her. When she meant it, she had a bark that was much lower and more ferocious that something like a GSD or Rottie and more in line wkth the Bolt super bark. Made the hair stand up on my neck each time. She also defended our beagle from a racoon. He was messing with it and it made him yelp so she ran over and killed it. Small coon, maybe 15-18 pounds.
