Plott Hound?
 

Got a pup recently from our local rescue place (here in Vermont but the dog is from Mississippi) - and had been thinking that she’s mostly Lab…but the more we observe “Lena,” (a very sweet doggie!) the more we see some un-lab-like characteristics (looks very lab-like in this photo, but when we watch her we’re still not sure):

Pursuing this further, we think that she may be part “Plott Hound,” a breed which neither myself nor my wife had ever heard of.

Looking further into this breed…Plott Hounds are apparently very rare, even though they are North Carolina’s “state dog.” Plotts are supposed to be very intelligent, loyal, and basically good natured, but also pretty high energy.

At any rate, while we are waiting on the results of the “Embark” DNA test to get back to us - I’m just curious if anyone here has any experience with this particular breed of dog?

If she loves asparagus, she’s probably a Lab.

I've never even heard of my state's dawg before this thread :D. Looks like a Lab to me.... my current chocolate is totally different than my last yellow fwiw. Both awesome Labs.... totally different tho'. What's un-Labby about your cuttie pie :)?

Never heard of a Plott Hound (had to look them up) but what a good looking pup!

Well...for one, she's a picky eater - certainly does not dive into her food like our last dog (also a rescue, but mostly lab), plus her ears are just a bit short, her face a bit long and narrow, legs seem quite long and some of the fur on her back and tail is a bit textured (almost seems "tousled" as opposed to directional).

At any rate...I'll try to post more photos at some point.

My ex has a plott hound. Great dog, but it will take off after any scent at every opportunity. Make sure the dog has id on her and a chip.

I wonder how many visits the Plott Hound wiki page gets today :D? Lena is a Lab (or mostly Lab).... no hound dawgy ears on her.... jmho. My Moka is from field champion lineage... bred to run all day like an Olympian and with a nose that just won't quit.... also adventurous and fearless. She's insisting that I end this bragging and go play ball tho' ...... see ya later :)!

Whatever breed it is I will say it's a good looking pup ! Enjoy every day as you bond/train/love .

Curious as to what you find out ..... but she's a Lab (mostly) imo based on that one pic.

And it really doesn't matter either..... we are all mutts :D

Curious what the DNA results will be. Will the plot thicken?

We had Plott hounds growing up, as my dad crossed them with beagles for hunting snowshoe hares in Northern Michigan (their long legs, coupled with beagle's good nose, made for great advantage operating in deep snow in winter). As said here, typical hound dog: very affectionate, but a real wanderer if they catch a scent they like. They are more commonly used for racoon hunting (along with Redbones. They also have a great hound-dog howl! I have fond memories...enjoy whatever you have!!!

Geographically, Lena Mississippi is adjacent to Coal Bluff Mississippi. So if the dog was named for her birthplace, the story gets a bit more interesting. Perhaps the Plott will thicken? :D

There is very little if any Plott in that dog. As others have stated, the ears are too short. On a Plott pup the ears should be even more pronounced. Also, most Plotts are lighter in color and very often brindle. Last but not least, the coat on your pup looks longer than what a Plott pup would usually show.

I have a bit of knowledge here, having a friend who is a life long Plott hound hunter in the 3rd generation. I have seen dozens of his dogs grow up and as pups. He keeps about 8-10 at any given time.

They are fantastic big game hounds and I have treed dozens of bears with their help. But they are definitely not good pets. I mean you can keep a hound as a pet but as others have noted, they will not be good off leash and will be too high strung to just be taken for walks. You'll need to take them on a bicycle or run them in an enclosed area to wear them out. They are generally friendly with people and entertaining, but I'd consider myself lucky to have a lot of Lab and not a lot of Plott in my mixed breed pet dog!

I think your dog is an ugly mutt!

To spare you and your family the humility of being seen in public with her I'll offer to come up and take her home with me.

Ears?

I’m guessing “no” on any hound being in that pup. Shape of the muzzle, ears, etc. Black lab and perhaps some Setter in there somewhere. In any case...she’s going to be a great addition to your family. That much is clear. Congrats!

So how long do we have to wait before Lena's DNA results come back .... you know a bunch of us can't stop clicking on this thread now doncha ;)?

Please post more pictures of Lena so we can continue our analysis.

I took us about 3 weeks to get the DNA results for our mutt. Except she isn't a mutt, the DNA says she's 100% American Foxhound.

Here's my simple test. Throw a tennis ball. If she brings it back, she's mostly lab. If she chases it, and either leaves it where it is, or picks it up and runs around wanting you to chase her, mostly hound. Another trait our hound exhibits is when you take her for a walk, the nose is on the ground and the tail is up in the air, curled back similar to a parenthesis. When she senses something she doesn't like, there's a little patch of hair on her back that bristles up. If she catches a scent, she's gone, she won't listen to either of us.

The neighbor has a lab / Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. He gets the whole ridge down his back when he gets excited.

Looks too smart to be 100% Labrador.
