Anti-perspirant versus deodorant

Amazon sent me Brute deodorant versus the Brute anti-perspirant/deodorant I ordered. That got me thinking, why would someone use a deodorant to cover-up BO instead of using an anti-perspirant to prevent it in the first place?

What’s your favorite anti-perspirant or deodorant?

Use of anti-perspirant will cause your body to find other places to cool itself off, ie sweat. At least deodorant allows you to sweat and stay cool.
Old Spice Swagger deodorant is what I use. Sometimes. On occasion. Not often enough according to my wife.

In the back of my mind isn’t anti-perspirant toxic or something?

I use deodorant and smell manly.

The use of aluminum in anti perspirant is said to have bad long term effects in the body.
You don’t stink but you get Alzheimers. Or something.

I haven’t used either since 2016. I sweat but don’t seem to smell. Wifey says I don’t need either one. Clean living.

I’ve never used deodorant. I don’t give off a funk. Yep… must be the clean (boring) life!

I must live a dirty life then !!!
Only time I have really notice a "funk" is when I have been out working in the yard all day. I use Right Guard Sport Fresh Scent 48hr protection, it is a deodorant-antiperspirant all in one.

Yep, anti-perspirant all day long. I've known that since I was in my teens. Of course, I've always lived somewhere hot where you will sweat a lot if you go outside.

I don't like anything that suppresses a natural body function, so anti-perspirant has always been out for me. I only use deodorant once in a while when my wife starts to complain.

I still sweat plenty. Antiperspirant doesn't really stop sweating in my experience, but it does stop the stink far more than deodorant.

On a related note, there have been times, maybe once every 3-5 years, where I realize I forgot to put on antiperspirant the previous night. I generally notice because I notice a smell at some point during the day. Once I was at work and noticed. I had some sort of anti-bacterial hand spray that was basically just alcohol and water. I sprayed it on my pits and the smell went away.

My understanding of the smell is that there are bacteria that live in our pits and crotches, and when you sweat, those bacteria live off of the sweat or what's in it or something like that. Those bacteria are what cause the smell. I guess the anti-bacterial alcohol spray kills the bacteria and therefore the smell.

This is the only one that works 'every time' for me. It's a roll-on deodorant.

A tiny bit of baking soda on the armpits once a week. Works very well.

I don't know the science of it. Only what someone told me. It's something like the bacteria find the baking soda toxic or poisonous, but it doesn't harm humans. It lasts for a week because it kills the bacteria other than just masking the smell.

It's a base (vs an acid) so it could bother some folks' skin. I did a quick search. Supposedly, skin is ideally acidic, and putting a base on it could throw the balance off which may or may not affect some people. I would think as long as it doesn't cause any issues for you, it's probably OK, and putting it on once a week, I would think, would be infrequently enough to allow the skin to recover from anything that the base did to it.

Interesting.

As a young kid...I remember Saturday as being 'bath day'.

I don't think that would work too well now.

Well, I get stinky if I don’t put something on. If I can smell it, I’m self conscious that everyone can. Working outside every day, sweaty armpits is not a good luck.

Edit: In addition to asthma and allergies, I inherited my dad’s ability to sweat bullets.😂
