How does a Panamera wheel blow up like this?

This was on a 2017 Panamera base model with 50K miles. The guy was just cruising along at about 50 mph.

production defect in oem wheels
it is possible

else : knock off wheels?
wouldn't be the first Porsche owner to buy a new Porsche put the oem wheels on the side the next day and slap knock off wheels on the car

metalurgy would be fairly obvious as to the break lines if it was OEM or knock off failure.

big rock or metal rod, caught inside the weel, very rare to get that , it would have had to be flying sideways under the car, weird but i supposed it is possible a front wheel throws something under and the rear wheel catches it?
unless there was a go pro under the car looking at the wheel, they would never know or find out if that was it

But most likely : very low profile tires, perhaps low pressure
pot hole or sharp and strong object
tire is impacted from below
not enough air space, suspension to stiff to react in time
wheel gets knocked from the inside and shard comes off.

Low profile tires are terrible choice for practical driving..They cannot aid the suspension, no tolerance for impacts and pot holes.

Could be from somebody prying against that area to straighten the rim and damaged it.

I agree. Damage from below. Is the missing piece in the wheel? I'd think you'd hear it either way....unless she had the stereo blaring.

I don't think the metal in the wheel would bend up that much without an impact. I think he ran over something. I don't think there's a missing piece, just a 7-8" crack that was created with an impact. The low side of the crack is near the edge of the wheel, the movement took place in the open part of the wheel.

i kinda like this theory.

he hit something and maybe he was underinflated or something, and the impact on the low-profile tire caused the load to contact the rim from the inside? is that what you are thinking?

Pretty much. He claims the wheel just blew up. I think he ran over something that whacked the wheel through the tire without puncturing the tire.

I've seen sidewalls cut down from hitting curbs. This seems like similar thing but probably hit some object in road or a crazy hole.

Are you sure my wife wasn't driving this car?

Looking at the curve of the rim it does not look bent, if it hit something recently it would still be bent, is it? What does the rim look like at 180 degrees?

Dittos on low profile tires...they look cool, but not smart to run on pothole filled streets and highways.

Looks like a fair bit of curb rash as well.

I'm guessing this guy hit something, or many somethings.

I was going to mention this but more importantly it seems the curb rash is mostly on the inside, not the outside of the wheel

He may have hit something some time ago but it didn't completely fail until it did.

FYI Our local police will only use steel wheels on their cars.

Well steel wheels are
A cheaper to buy
B cheaper to replace

C cheaper to repair big dent on the lip: apply heat bang bang bang GTG

The more you look at it the weirder it is. There is no deformation towards the hub. Just a strange looking hole. Plus curb rash on the inside - also a bit weird. An unloved wheel for sure; but what actually happened to it.

I'm wondering if it had been repaired in the past by cold hammering it back into shape, and the bit of metal just gave up and blew out.

Curb rash on the inside of low profile tires is often caused by car wash drive rail.

That would destroy the tire at 50 mph.
Maybe someone is messing with us?

I sold this used Panamera to a guy about 3 weeks ago and all I know is what he's telling me. It looks to me like the hole would basically be gone if the metal was pushed down. I bet he rolled up onto the edge of a curb or something as the wheel rolled along with the edge near the middle of the tire and parallel to the direction it was rolling. Like up a ramp to the top of the curb from where a driveway would be cut into the curb. I think he's lying about not hitting anything- you'd feel whatever caused that!

Went to a Tech Session at Fikse and they said “if we use as little material here as possible, we can save the most weight” in that exact spot

Is he trying to get you to buy him a wheel or something?
