I'm a PCA instructor. It's rare we see ANY air cooled cars show up at our DEs around here anymore.

I agree with you on this. For a long time, I was really bias about the water pumpers and went ahead on a long hood build, a track car that I can legally drive on the street, 2.7L with about dyno at about 250-260 at the crank, 1900 lbs. Along the way I bought a Cayman S. I enjoy driving that so much. Getting into the long hood is like driving an old tractor even through I have a custom 935 shifting linkages that shifts like a bolt action rifle, all Heim joints. Working on a 996 TT now. I love to get my hands on a 991TT or S. For now, I need let things cool for a bit. No more cars. Losing a bit of interest.

I remember instructing in one. My student was a teenager that shared the car that weekend with his father. He was a beginner then he turned the car over to his father who was signed off to drive himself.
That car was on the track (Mosport) for half the run groups both Sat. and Sun. and didn't miss a beat.

I hear you. They're just too slow for the most part and it's no fun driving your mirrors. I went for years with an SC, then a 993 (really not a great track car stock), but after that went water cooled... At some point 10y back or so I resurrected the SC and made it into a backdated track car, light weight and very sticky tires... It did OK in turns and was fun to drive in isolation, but on the straights I could not even setup a proper line for the next turns because I was so busy giving point bys to GT3s ;-) Every other car on PCA track days was a weapon - Water cooled GT3, GT3 RS.

I have not been for a few years, I wonder how it is now, with GT3s being priced stratospherically, I wonder of people may be taking them to the track as much ? I hope so...

I live in the Bay Area and air cooled cars have a bimodal ownership distribution now. Millennials and boomers. Hardly anyone my generation. So, yes, half the drivers are geezers now, but there is a BIG interest by the hipster crowd in air cooled cars including the 993.

Some of you guys are FOS bashing the 993's abilities! Yes, in stock form, worst a C4, they are not the hottest car out there any longer. But they need very little to come up to snuff even compared to a more modern sportscar.

I drive a mildly modified 993 and it is just right. It walks away from stock 996 and many other newer cars, even in the straights. I can still do a DE and not be embarassed. I can still hang with the red run group. The rear suspension on the 993 is a work of art, the harder you corner the more it squats down and grabs onto the road. Nothing beats the sound of that fan winding up to redline. And no obsolete GPS and other screen BS you get in the later cars. Good old interior with a beautiful greenhouse from 1965. What's not to like?

I do want to buy a GT3 to get into the water, but that will be an additional car.

I'd have one if it came my way.

They have got crazy expensive around here recently. SC and 3.2 cars are popular. Not so much the 964s, but prices are nuts for longhoods and 993s.

I think the 993 is still a bargain compared to what an impact bumper car or worse, a 964 cost. The 964 often is more and a G50 Carrera the same. People tend to be scared of the 993 because it is "more complicated". My car has been dead reliable and it is just as easy to DIY as an earlier air cooled car.

No Porsche is a bargain today without glorious projections.

The 993 is still a car with a lot of maintenance issues. Most folks have no idea of the valve adjustment and oil needs.

We will see a correction in value one day as nothing has gone up in value forever.

Valve adjustment on the 993? That's one thing I don't miss from the SC.

Prices will come down on everything, for sure. And I am standing by (aforementioned GT3). The decline is already happening. Not sure if getting a new one without a huge markup will be possible anytime soon though. My dream is European delivery.

George, you talking 'bout new GT3? A friend just bought one couple months back, the mark up was 9000.00. The original was 10k, but he and another friend both bought one at the same time knocking a thousand bucks off the mark up for each of them. The wait time is 6-9 months.

Yes, 992. Your friends must be shopping at the dealership more than I do. I am a nobody at my dealer, of course. I wasn't able to get an allocation even with a 10% above MSRP (my spec was in the 180k range). They were basically auctioning off allocations ... "how much are you willing to pay over sticker?". Naturally, there were others that wanted a new GT3 more badly and loaded them into the 200k+ range with options.

Back on subject, the dealer did ask if I was selling my 993. I am sure I would have been higher on the list ordering a new GT3 if I would have let them take the 993 in trade for next to nothing. Interestingly this dealer will not shy away from buying an air cooled car and selling it in their used car lot!

Reminds me, I should go back there and see what's in store for next year. A European delivery needs to be during the summer months to make sense.

neither was satisfactory to me stock but both are equally fun now, in different ways

I tried the McGuire wheel cleaner on my Fikse which are notorious tough to keep clean. Amazing product. Here the result on my bloated boomer GT car ;)
