I need a good quality manual can opener.

My wife has gone through at least 5 can openers in the past two years. A couple she claimed tore the label off the can while she was opening them. Others just didn't open the can completely. This last one was the most expensive and heavy duty I've ever bought. She somehow bent the thing to the point that the cutting blade was on the opposite side of the wheel that rotates under the can lip. I've had no problem with most of these openers. I just want to buy one that will last and open the can easily and not have to hear her mumbling (swearing) under her breath. What do you use?
Thanks

masraum 07-26-2022 08:39 AM

We have this one and I like it. It cuts the top so you can use it as a lid and the edges aren't sharp.

These people usually make really good kitchen utensils, so I suspect this one is top notch. I believe this one is also a horizontal cut.

I like OXO products. Reasonable priced

matthewb0051 07-26-2022 08:43 AM

OXO but not the kind that takes off the lid. (Sorry Steve)

We tried one of the lid off types and found it a PITA to use. But I don't believe it was OXO

We have this OXO and love it:

Easy to open cans of all sizes, especially for those with limited hand/grip strength. Magnet also keeps lid from falling into open cans. Five stars.

Scott Douglas 07-26-2022 08:59 AM

We have an old Oxo, the kind that leaves an edge you could shave with on the lids.
Had it for as long as I can remember. No magnets but one sharp blade.

When we were first married, we got one of those electric types that mount under cabinet. Thought that was the thing to do.

Had it for years, then at some point it broke or we lost it in a move. After that we went with hand held like in the links above. Every now and then we have a discussion about how much better the hand held is and how we can't believe we ever liked the mounted electric type.

Scott Douglas 07-26-2022 09:02 AM

We had an electric that sat on the counter. It worked OK if the can fit under it, large cans not so much. Once the kids started getting involved with cooking it left the scene.

Skill craft. Made by the blind

masraum 07-26-2022 09:12 AM

My first experience with the openers that result in a lid that's not sharp was with something like this, and it was fantastic, although probably not as easy as something larger.

Many years ago, when I bartended I got a little experience with one of these. THey are awesome, but probably not what most homeowners would want.

Swing a Way. The gold standard. Mine has to be 30 yrs old. Stills works like new.

She said really should get a real can opener, and I said it was a real can opener, here is the open can to prove it.

She bought me the typical hand operated can opener for under a buck. I just continued to use my pocket knife. It works great. Still does, but we have an electric can opener now that was likely a wedding present to us 30 years go.

You're right, can't beat the price but I doubt very much she would be willing to use something like that and with the arthritis in my thumbs, no way!

Ok I'll give one of those OXOs a shot.
Thanks!

Goodwill, $0.50, then 10 min with the Dremel if the cutting wheel is dull.

fintstone 07-26-2022 09:38 AM

Swing away is absolutely the best...but try to find one made in the USA. New ones come from China...and seem to be a lot less quality.

Starless 07-26-2022 09:49 AM

Anybody try this OXO opener? Is it any good?

We got one at Ikea a few months ago. Works very well. Sorry don't have a picture like the rest of you guys with time on your hands to google. ;)

Yeah, that's what comes up for me too. Can't figure out how it would work. Good reviews though.

Yep, I was gonna reccomend that exact brand.
We have one of those that cut the lid off from the side also and my wife loves it, I absolutely hate it!!! [emoji23]
Can't go wrong with the Swing Away.

I've tried that one and had moderate success.

I believe that one is used for kicking the can.

Had to look. The one we use is an OXO

BTW, if you think that thing reviews well, you should look at the reviews for the banana slicer!

This.

We regularly find these at garage sales for less than a dollar and sell them on ebay for $20. They work very, very well and when kept clean, will last a lifetime. Problem is, people open cans of fruit or tomatoes and the sugar gums up the blades (which are supposed to turn) and then they don't work. When they don't work, they get bent because people force them. The USA ones are stainless so just rinse them after use if you get food on them. But you have to buy used since the new ones are Chinese that rust just looking at them.

Thanks! That was very useful. I was ready to order the OXO after seeing how it worked, but when my wife saw the part of the video where a piece of the label came off with it, it turned her off. She has already complained about a couple we've had that took part of the label off with it so i guess we're back to the old style Swing Away types.

The American plant that made Swing Aways is making the same thing under a different brand. I wish I knew that before I bought the Chinese one.

Just called "Made In USA"...

Or there's this one made by the same Steuby Company in Missouri. The "EZ-DUZ-IT"

Apparently, both are manufactured by the same people...but sold by both (prices differ).

Im definately going to be looking for a swing a way for a backup. Our electric one crapped out and we bought a few new ones that were so bad we brought them back. Found this old one at a garage sale for 2 bucks and have been using it the last ten years. It was a under mount i made the hairpin legs for it. Sometimes it needs dissabling to clean and adjust. But they certainly dont make things like they used to and appliances has to be at the top of that list.

I remember when I worked at an Italian restaurant. We opened up big cans of tomatoes, olives, etc.

Which reminds me, I used to cut the pepperoni on one of those electric slicing machines. I think I ate as much as I stored for later that night. Cheese too.

We have broken more can openers than I care to count. The can opener that I use most often is on my 40 year old Swiss Army knife...

Used that type when I worked at Pizza Hut many moons ago to open large cans of tomato paste. Raise it up and drop it onto the top of the can and crank away!!!
