Last weekend I went into guitar center and just played a bunch of different guitars. I didn't focus on brand, cost, anything - just what felt and sounded good to me.

I found out that I REALLY like the Taylor 414CE Studio. Anyone have any experience or opinions on those?

If I were you, I'd drive to Nashville and spend the night there. You could try out everything on the market.

My mind was blown yesterday. Billy is everywhere these days. If you can bring yourself to listen to new music, he is one of the brightest stars.

This 13-year old Saxon can make this old Martin sing:

Jeff - those are SWEET!

How do they play?

Jeff Alton 08-10-2025 05:17 PM

They play amazing. I love the nut and neck size on these (I have a 3rd walnut custom shop one as well). Pretty much Les Paul style. Seymour Duncan Custom shop pickups, classic Beehive capacitors etc.. Even I can make them sound OK :)

Swamp Ash bodies (with internal cutaways) make them light for a Les Paul style guitar.

This is the Walnut one.... https://www.instagram.com/p/CxyYWOMv0Gl/?img_index=1

I am Fender body shape guy-- tele's and Strats- but I love these Prestige Guitars.

Prestige has authorization from Gibson to produce this body shape as they supply Gibson with a lot of their tone woods...

Cheers

I did a thing.

I think I mentioned before, when I retired from the workplace, they give you points on a rewards site to spend. Not a ton of points, certainly no gold watch, but I used most of the points for $400 worth of Guitar Center gift cards. I had to add a little on top but ended up with a 70th Anniversary Fender Stratocaster in a Surf Green Pearl. It doesn't do much inside, but it really sparkles in the sunlight. It's Mexican made, basically a Player spec guitar. I wanted to buy an American built one, but for my skills this fits just fine. Maybe the next one.

This is my next guitar. I was at Sweetwater today and saw this one for the second time. It will be mine.

For you 80s Van Halen fanbois, you may recall this one from the No Bozos ad. My guitar teacher got one for $500 when the execs from Kramer were driving around to all their dealers in NJ around 1983. He had to beg them to sell it to him. I put a lot of hours on it. But Kramer got buried in orders, had to outsource to ESP and then changed a lot of stuff. So very few of these got made before things changed. My teacher later got a DUI and needed cash badly. I was headed to Germany as an exchange student when he offered it to me. I already had a newer one by then and passed. While I was away, his was stolen in a burglary. If you can find a real one of these, they go for north of $5k now. But Gibson is making super accurate reissues now. They're still kind of hard to find, but they're out there. I will buy this guitar when the right deal comes along.

Thats cool!

Jeff Alton 08-17-2025 09:05 PM

Rick, thats a cool guitar.

Steve Carlton 08-18-2025 12:25 PM

Taylor Guitars is offering 0% for 3 years on their regular new inventory. There's a dealer in PA that discounts them maybe 20% or more and ships without charging sales tax.

Jeff Alton 08-18-2025 09:43 PM

I have had 2 Taylor, only have the KOA one still.... Great guitars...

Steve Carlton 08-19-2025 07:13 AM

I got a Koa 724ce when they came out in 2022. Super happy with it! When Taylor decided to stop selling online themselves, he bought up a few of them, as well as the smaller 722ces. I'm not sure what he would actually sell these for.

Joe's the owner there and a really nice guy. I bought a couple of guitars from him, plus one of these just now. He's got a special sale next month and gave me that price ($2,399 with 0% for 36 mo) on one of his special edition 414ces, with a cedar top/maple side and back.

His blow-out, no return sale is 9/13, but he'll do the deals early. You can text Joe at four one two, 915, seven one one eight. Storewide sale at https://empiremusic.com/

Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit, I moved to Arizona and after loading up the truck I swore I had too many guitars and was going to do some serious thinning of the herd.

We close on the new house next Friday and we have been furniture shopping. I kept a good amount of sale proceeds to the side for incidentals and things turned out cheaper than expected.

I have a Legend Guitar Co 12 string Jumbo that I bought cheap that is hands down the best 12 string I've ever owned. The company was started by some ex Larrivee Guitar employees who hand built excellent guitars but went out of business after a few years. Not sure the circumstances around that, but they pop up occasionally and I had watched this one on Reverb for a while.

Well, it came back up drastically reduced (This was probably a $3200 guitar back in 2001) and I pulled the trigger. Actually got it for $899 shipped which is amazing.

Hand shaped neck, top of the line solid woods and should be a great addition although a bit "blingy" for my taste but what the heck.

Looks like a nice find- the maple is insane! The slotted headstock is nice, too.

Jeff Alton 08-23-2025 08:44 PM

Yes, that Maple is crazy nice!!!

Legend now appears to be in Nova Scotia, far east coast from where they started. Let me dig a bit more into the company history- I have a few contacts here :)

But that is a beautiful guitar.

Speaking of Larivee. I bought this little Larivee 0-50 parlor guitar years ago from a bluegrass player out here. He said it came from Carter Vintage Guitars somewhere in it's past.
