If you squint, there is at least one guitar and one bass in this pile of wood.. along with some other odds and ends depending on how much of the wood is good after I have it milled

Back story, this tree was a small tree when I was a kid...it was in my grandparents, now my houses backyard.. Eventually it succumbed to age and rot.. So I had it taken down, Its a Black Cherry, I managed to get a bunch of firewood, and cooking wood, and I saved the few straight pieces to be milled for wood projects.. They are 18-15 in dia by about 5-7 ft length..



I also recently bought a CNC router, so I can make sawdust and not even have to be present



Hopefully Ill be able to make a few guitars, and some odds and ends for my brothers and cousins from aa tree from Nans backyard..

I'd prefer to have a pickguard, plus I'd probably thrash the top, so I ordered a tortoise one from Taylor for $9.

I'm going to be changing a tone pot on a Squier Strat and started to think of solder and the best kind to use for this type of wiring. I'm pretty sure I have some silver solder buried someplace, would it be better than the Lead free, 99.3% tin 0.7% copper that I have at hand.
Does it make a difference? What do you guys use?

So,

Just heard from Mike, owner of Prestige Guitars. The family of John Lyall, who was the co driver of the #14 Safari Rally Porsche that our guitar was modeled after, learned of the commission and reached out to express their gratitude for the colaboration and were quite taken aback by it. Kinda cool , I am hoping to be able to touch base with them in the future, share some pics of me with the car and share memories.

Its a small world these days...

picked up a 59 Bassman LTD. love it. not 100% about the speakers. i am carefully breaking them in before deciding if I will replace them. they do sound good at lower clean volume which is where i run all my amps



full pedal board currently



this section is what i would use to play out, go to a jam session etc. just got the Barber Buss pedal yesterday. awesome pedal

Beautiful guitar and great wood combo Steve! I've got a few cedar topped Furch/Stonebridge dreads and the tone really rings. Enjoy!

The Tayor 414CE, the BEST body shape they every made, plus a cedar top? Super cool, must have some really soft tones to it. Love that guitar Steve, epic.

I hear the Grand Auditorium (xx4) body is Taylor's bread and butter body. I have a 724ce and it rocks. This was a special build commissioned by Empire Music with Cedar and Maple, a pretty unusual combination that makes sense. I like the uniqueness of it.

I bought my first acoustic guitar. It’s a 1982 Martin h28.

The action is high, I hope I allowed enough for a neck reset if needed. I’m too much of an impulse buyer. I was very interested in a used d18 at guitar center, but the sales staff didn’t seem to have much time to talk with me, and could not answer any questions when I did run them down.

Anyway this is what I have.

Congrats. Not sure what you mean by “ I hope I allowed enough for a neck reset if needed”. Did you do work on it? You might want to buy a 4 pack of the Martin high compensated bone saddles ($37). I know they are 2.9” long. Don’t know if they will drop fit your bridge slot but they might. With 4 and the one in there now, you could mess around with various heights. Simple to do with some research, measurements and sand paper. I actually ordered a pack this afternoon but just got a message that they are back ordered. I’m sure you can find them if you hunt around.

If you've got a return window on that guitar (is it an HD-28?), I'd take it to a luthier with an excellent reputation with Martins. A 43 year-old Martin could need a lot of work to get it in good shape. Might need to be re-fretted, maybe new tuners, a neck reset, binding repair, bracing repair, intonation checked, etc, etc.

The string on the low e is currently a hair over 3mm. The saddle does not have a lot of room to go lower.

That’s a D-28. Should be a great guitar. I would check to make sure the bridge is not lifting, check the neck relief and string height at the 12 fret and then set up as necessary. Anything can be fixed and an 82 D-28 is worth fixing. If there’s nobody local, I would contact Brian Kimsey and see if he is taking in new work and ship it to him.
