5th Gen 4Runner

I searched a bit and could not find a thread dedicated to the latest gen 4Runner. I just took delivery of a 2023 Off Road Premium. My Xterra died and I got tired of dealing with a 15yo car and all that comes with it.

So far I am pretty blown away by the jump in technology. All of the off road gizmos are pretty cool too.

The 2023s finally got a radio with Entune. The old radio was a huge disappointment.

I think FJs are something to hang on to. I think they are going to be pretty desirable in the not to distanf future.

I shopped for a long a time and and avoided dealers that weren’t doing msrp. Which tons of them are charging pretty big markups for 4Runners. So The Truck was $51k +tax which is pretty high where I live. Took 10 weeks and didnt have much choice as far as options and color goes.

But I really wanted KDSS and the multi terrain monitor so very happy with what I ended up.

KDDS kicks ass. Take it into the canyons and see for yourself. I daily one when I am not driving my Cayman or truck. All the electronics are damn good at getting you unstuck. I have not had to use it yet but did try it on a sandy section with large holes on a trail and it drove itself out. Pretty cool tech. It got 19-20 on hwy (at 80 mph). best mpg vehicle I own.

I had a 2016 Trail which became the TRD Off Road. It had KDSS which makes it handle great and just a solid vehicle. I ended up lifting it, which at that time very few knew how to do the lift with KDSS (that you could trust) so if you have any questions let me know. I used a Toytec lift.

There's a few Toyota freaks lurking around on this board, they crawl out of the woodwork from time to time.

This is my 2019 TRD Off Road Premium the day I drove it home:

I have resisted modifying it so far. I actually only have about 17k miles on it as I mostly drive my Land Cruiser, but...I am about to bite the bullet and do the suspension because I really don't like the soft ride. I originally bought a set of Bilstein 5100s and was going to level it, but have since decided to go a little more robust and will probably go with a Dobinsons lift. I like the spring rate and lift customization that Dobinsons offers.

Yours looks great and will be a joy.

Always an argument about which generation 4Runner is best.

I'll just say, "the one you own". We had a 2003 we both used that my wife loved and she now has has a 2020 SR5 Premium 4x4 we bought new with no real off-road "stuff". She loves it as well. I have about two hours total left seat time in it

My daughter has a 5th gen as well...she traded in her 2006 FJ with just about 300k on it for what I thought was a really, really fair price.

My son has a 2013 FJ we bought used in early 2018 with 32k on it It has all the off-road goodies available at the time and is green with a white top....my favorite combo.

He off-roads quite a bit and it is very capable.

Enjoy your 4Runner and get out off the pavement!

Here is an excellent sumation of the 4Runner generations: https://trail4runner.com/2017/10/23/4runner-generation-history/

Welcome to the world of quality vehicles!

Had to chuckle at the 'all the tech' comment as Toyota is about as far back in the stone ages as possible in that arena.

That's why I sold mine. The 4.0 is a sluggish engine in today's performance market. I get better gas mileage and more towing power with my F150.

This is my 4th 4Runner. I had a 1987 (1st gen), 2001 (3rd gen), 2008 (4th gen) and now the 2019.

Best? Depends on the usage, maybe. Which one have a like the best? The 1987. 22R-E, 5-speed...simple and awesome.

One thing I find is that people (myself included) buy these cars for their versatility, being excellent DD’s and excellent off-roaders.

In my situation, I thought about upgrading but haven’t been able to justify trying to improve on the very features I bought the car for.

It looks like 4-Runners have replaced FJ Cruisers (Toyota has finally ceased all FJ production) because they do everything just a little bit better. I’m almost positive my next new purchase will be a 4-Runner.

Its all relative coming from an 07 Xterra Off Road with exactly zero tech.

If they just took OP's truck, put a nice rugged cloth interior with dual auto climate controls, no sunroof and the 4.7 V8 from a few models ago...well by golly i'd say they had the perfect 4runner.

I had a '16 Trail Premium. I gave it the full TRD Pro look. I liked it for what it was, just didn't like it on the highway. The 5 speed trans was annoying. I do miss it though.
I had to bribe my wife with an MDX to make my 911 troubles go away.

The new Sequoia looks nice, but $80K+? Looking forward to what the 7th Gen 4Runner looks like.
