We have tarantulas here. I saw one once while out mowing. It was very timid. They are, from what I understand, actually pretty fragile. If one crawled up my leg, I think I'd launch it into orbit while sheitting myself.

My wife's grandmother used to have a house on some property that the family used as a get-away. It was down a 1/4mile drive that was essentially a tunnel through the woods. There were many weekends when we'd leave when I got off work on Fri night, and get there at 10 or 11pm. Driving down the 1/4 mile drive, you'd see hundreds of webs spanning the driveway hung between the trees. The bodies of the spiders were bulbous and the size of the end of your thumb. As we drove down the road through their webs, you'd hear the thumps as they hit the top of the car. Then when we got to the house in the pitch dark, you had to get out of the car that was potentially covered in large spiders. That was always my least favorite part of the trip.

They were usually this sort of thing.
I pulled up into my driveway one night about 8pm. I saw a black hand walking across the concrete. I got out to check it out and take a close up. Flash goes off and I learned quickly tarantulas jump, far and fast. Really far like 40 inches before you can even think.

Between the black hairy large ones and the quick smaller red mexican tarantulas they even get the dogs concerned. They will go into warning nuisance bark but wont go near them.

I had a dead one by my front door. My mail lady would not come within 20 feet from it. I had to go out and greet her after three days of no mail delivery. This dead bug took the poor girls voice from her soul she was so afraid of it.

On of my friends keeps one as a pet in a Habitrail. Its a greenbottle blue tarantula he has had if about 15 years. Beautiful creature as long is it stays inside the Habitrail .

One thing for sure, Mike Rowe is the most phobia free human ever. He has been there done that on pretty much all the phobias. Lots of very tight places, lots of crazy heights, picked up snakes, scorpions, spiders, skunks, and wild chickens. Been armpit deep in the back end of cows, and down in many sewers, and covered in powder of many sorts, survived the stench od a tannery, and every type of processing plant, extreme cold and heat.

Dang, I miss Dirty Jobs.
