Gas prices are... um well, wait a minute

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) fell to its lowest level since 1983 last week as U.S. gasoline prices and oil prices ticked up, according to federal data released Wednesday.

The level of the SPR — an emergency stockpile of crude oil managed by the Department of Energy (DOE) — declined to 375.1 million barrels last week, marking the first time it has fallen below 378 million barrels since December 1983, according to the Energy Information Administration. Prior to last week, the reserve's lowest level since 1983 was recorded on Dec. 30, 1983, when it hit 378.3 million barrels.
Many believe that prices will be shooting back up this spring.

Maybe not if the economy is sufficiently destroyed by then.

They're working on that...

stevej37 12-28-2022 10:31 AM

Back up to $2.89 with a dollar diff for premium ($3.89)

Artificially depressed for the November elections and this winter. Typical political ploy. Run out of gas in the spring when its nice and warm enough to walk to work, if you still have a job.

I predict gas prices will continue to creep upward just to push both the "car free" and "get an EV" agendas...

astrochex 12-28-2022 12:04 PM

$3.019 for 93 today.

I noticed my goto Sheetz's sign was 2.64 on Christmas day when I drove by .... now back to 2.99 with mid & prem at 2.98 (via GB). Yesterday, the closest Sheetz was 2.78 (usually .20-25 higher than my goto). They are just messin' wif us, and I still don't need any ;).

I did purchase 1 gal. of No-Eth 90 for 3.60 yesterday .... woo hoo!

That's only at the Sheetz stations, and started a few weeks back. Dunno what is going on, but that's "just not right" here either .... Sheetz has been doing a lot of price manipulation and swings that don't follow historical trends this past year.... so who knows?

Because they can....

stevej37 12-28-2022 01:41 PM

^^^
We don't have Sheetz here....wish we did. :)
(And I do give a sheetz)

Por_sha911 12-28-2022 01:43 PM

Just went up 20 cents in one fell swoop.
(ever notice that is goes up by 10 or 20 cents but only drops a few pennies and takes much longer to come back down?)

Por_sha911 12-28-2022 01:56 PM

Late Spring / early Summer prices naturally go up because the summer blend is more expensive to produce.

stevej37 12-28-2022 01:59 PM

^^^ That happened here in MI the last couple months.
A refinery fire caused a big jump...prices rose quickly. When it was fixed...the prices slowly settled back.

With my 25 year work history in the oil industry, including extended stints at Prudhoe Bay and countless international assignments for BP/SOHIO, I can say with profound authority that I have no frikkin' clue what Sheetz is doing.

However, they sold 88 octane 15% ethanol for two bucks a gallon for one week near Thanksgiving. Super cheap. That was strange because there were only a couple stations in Akron that handled that grade.

My gut feel is they cooked way too much of the 88 octane 15% ethanol and they are dumping it because it ain't selling. They are splash blending it to minimum standards for 89/93 oxy at the terminal to unload.

This morning the news said the summer gas will cost more partly because the summer gas gets more additives. Do you know if summer gas really gets more additives ? Sounds like BS to me.

Reg up 15 cents from yesterday after holding steady for a week and a half.

I'm staying in Pompano Beach for a couple of weeks. Gas prices are all over the place> I filled up at Costco for $2.79, down the street the price varies from .20 cents more to $4.99 for regular at a Chevron station.

Baz 12-28-2022 06:51 PM

$3.099/gal. for regular today at the Circle K.

I like this place because when I insert my Discover chip card, it doesn't ask me to punch in my zip code.

Everywhere else does.

It's also very clean and there's never a line.

Today I got a chicken & swiss sammich for $2 with my fill up. Def Leppard was on the stereo inside. Gotta be a good sign I'm at the right place right there! :)

Bob, how does this all work? As I've mentioned before, I live near the largest Colonial tank farm, and Colonial moves approx. 3 million bbls per day up the east coast, split between two pipelines.... one for gasoline, and one for jet fuel/diesel/heating products... I got this from Wiki. I've always thought that Ethanol was added at the tank farm, and figured octane enhancers were similar additives added at the farm/tanker truck.

Here, Sheetz usually just has their prices for 87 octane (10% Eth) and that 88 (15% stuff) posted on their signs...

'Splain it to me Lucybob :)!
