Sears Hometown stores- all to be closed
The slow death spiral of Sears continues . They have announced all Hometown stores to be closed . That leaves about 12 Sears stores in north America still open . How the mighty have fallen ☹️

What surprises me more is that JC Penney stores are still around.
|
I thought they went TU years ago. Now you'll be telling me KMart and Montgomery Wards still have a few stores.
|
KMart is thriving in Canada.

I remember when in 5th grade..my neighbor bought a 300 cc motorcycle from Sears. It was the first bike in the neighborhood and I really wanted one. (I think it was an Italian make)
He only had it about a year and it started giving him problems. I think he ended up shoving it in the garage and it stayed there. |
At my high school, there was a large Sears store almost next door. I regularly stopped there on the trip home to drool and dream in the tool department. They had a PA system with a horrid very high pitched squeal. I had to walk around with my fingers in my ears. More than once the employees would ask why I had my finders in my ears, and I said due to the squeal for the PA system and it was like telling them there were unicorns flying around as they were too old to hear it. Several of my high school friends said they heard it as well.
I really do miss the Sears tool department. Like the Montgomery Ward plumbing department back then had more plumbing stuff than most Ace Hardware stores do today. I don;t think I ever went to a Kmart. We had TG&Y here in Oklahoma and Otasco as great stores. All gone now. |
there were those twingles by puch from the checz's AT 200CC odd 2 strokes
and a Gilera 105 cc from italy all called allstates |
^^^ I think you are right....I remember the name 'Puch'
Did they have one in a 300cc size...or am I forgetting? |
I did a quick google search for Allstate motorcycles and I was pleasantly surprised by all these models! (It's a rare swap meet that doesn't have an Allstate moped or motorcycle, but I had no idea there were this many!)
https://cybermotorcycle.com/marques/sears-allstate/sears-allstate-troyce.htm I like this organically styled design! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1672438260.jpg |
Amazon essentially had a similar business model as Sears did in their early years, just relevant to the interwebs climate. I believe when Sears built the tower, which ended up with HUGE cost over-run by the time it was finished ......smack in the middle of a recession. That was the real beginning of their decline.
|
Sears could have done the same thing as Amazon. They had the contacts, they owned all that land, they had huge customer lists. They missed the boat completely.
I reckon Amazon will be usurped in 100 years by some upstart that blows them out of the water. |
I still have my grandfathers Sears shotgun....to be restored of course.
|
We didn’t have a lot of money growing up and I never had a real pair of jeans (Levis) until high school. From kindergarten through third grade it was Sears Toughskins - I hated those things!
|
We used to have a Sears in the mall in Auburn, then when it closed, we had a Sears Home Store in Opelika, but it also closed. The only thing I bought at the Sears Home Store, quite a few years ago, was a dual bar bumper for my Craftsman LT2000, it was the very last one they had.

Used to buy my Kenmore appliances from the local Sears here. Still have the fridge and stove!
|
^^^ Kenmore is an excellent appliance.
I have a chest freezer, washer/dryer and fridge that are all Kenmores. All work as new. |
I have very clear memories of getting on the downtown bus with Mom to make the monthly payments on our Sears appliances. Then we'd go to Woolworth's for hot dogs and we'd split a Coke. Good days were they.

We did the same...except it was Walgreens for the food.
They had booths all along the windows that faced the street...the street was always packed with people. The Sears store was my first time seeing/riding an escalator. |
My most vivid recollection of the local Sears back in the early/mid 60s was their long glass candy counter :D.

When I first moved away from home and to a new city and state I had no credit record in Oklahoma.
I wanted to establish credit so I went to Sears and applied for their card. It was a funny looking credit card, not the same size as all other cards, but about half the height but same width. I bought some vital tools (OK, I am a tool junkie) and paid them off over two months just to establish credit. I did not carry that card in my wallet to avoid using it to buy more vital tools. All tools are vital aren't they? Sears was one of the very first places to give me credit. I got a J.C. Penny's credit card as well. They had a great camera and electronics department. I did buy a lens from Penny's and again paid it off over a few months to build credit. |
I thought Sears was already long gone years ago. Didn't know they still had stores.
|
There was still a large one anchoring a shopping mall near me....it closed a year or so ago.
|
It might also surprise you the Montgomery Wards is still out there in some form or another. Don't think there are physical stores though.

^^^ I was remembering this thread...I searched for it and I was mistaken. It was Australia.

Sears Tower.
We used to be great, we used to do great things. Oh, well, it has been 50 yrs. Kinda like comparing 1900s UK with 1950s UK. Signs of the demise and death of an empire. |
Welcome to 2018. :)
|
Yeah, sometimes remembering the past helps me get past thinking about the future.
As for Sears, in descending order from my 40s back: appliances, tools, cheap Levis on the factory 2nds table, Scout uniforms, and the candy section. The Sears 'wish-book' (ask your parents). |
Downfall started when they were sued over the slogan ‘SEARS has everything’ come to think of it a lot of things started to slide with the mentality that brought on that law suit.

Sears who?
I got my main mechanic toolset from USA Craftsman, but today would start out with all Tekton or something via Amazon. |
Just about every tool, tool box, etc. in my garage is a Craftsman purchased in the local stores (3 of them) two decades ago. Their auto center is also who I used to align my Carrera after I r&r'd the suspension and lowered her to Euro height. Called a local air cooled guru and that's who he used and suggested. The mechanic even let me get under the rack and watch him as he could see my results and knew I wanted to learn all I could. He's the only one that's ever touched my car too...
All are ancient history now :( |
I remember my dad using Sears Spectrum motor oil , back when quart cans had to be punctured with a spout . Can was gold color .
