I dunno. Just thinking out loud. In other news, you've inspired me to go paint frankenbike, which I pulled out of a neighbor's trash can 20 years ago. A trek 930 which has seen thousands of miles. It's latest trinket are some inverted nitto bars. I grabbed a can of rustoleum, shot as much I could without extreme overspray, and liking the look, will strip the bike down to frame, sandblast it, and shoot a real coat here soon. : http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1686877659.JPG Also got some new RH tires for my ol' school mtb- As the gravel roads here dry up and become washboard, this bike is a hoot. Ridiculously 90's http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1686877659.JPG And starting to set up bike racks to get some of this stuff off the floor. This weekend, a second set of racks go up. There are 11+ bikes laying around: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1686877659.JPG Summer solstice gets my biking on in full gear.I wants tooo get out and enjoy every second of it! :) |
Paul is doing a limited Pewter release (the project cogs are turning... lol).

Who has experience with fancy hubs?
I never heard of Chris King until I started this build. Now the more I'm looking into them I notice that Campagnolo doesn't build hubs anymore. They got out of that part of the market. Chris King https://th.bing.com/th/id/OIP.4rGxc4...id=ImgDet&rs=1 look nice, pricey, light Phil Wood https://i.pinimg.com/originals/36/ff...8e9c0b7ab6.jpg Industry 9 https://th.bing.com/th/id/OIP.GxWrGr...id=ImgDet&rs=1 All very nice and I have heard of Phil Wood before but these are essentially Boutique Hubs. I bought a partial Shimano 105 groupset and I have a set of 105 hubs that are almost identical to the Campagnolo hubs I used to build the wheels. I'd like to build a gravel bike next and I'm considering a few things like disc brakes. Are these hubs worth it to you guys? Do you like the extra noise some of them make? |
Chris Kings are easy to service and overhaul (provided you have access to the correct tools etc); that makes them long lived and therefore cheap/ mile ridden... year ridden etc.
Noise is reasonably straightforward to reduce if you want to... slightly heavier grease in the free hub and the noise is much less intrusive... if that is what you like. |
... Or just keep pedaling so you never hear the racket. ;)
|
White Industries makes beautiful hubs as well.

"Campagnolo" Square Taper BB - 120mm. #philwoodco ;)
(Edit: You shouldn't mix the two square tapper standards, Campagnolo - ISO and Japanese - JIS) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1687989256.jpg |
I like Chris King hubs and had them one tome or another as well as White Ind. and Campy. This was a time when I was chasing grams and racing so everything counted. I now just buy the wheels, Zipp, Envy and such. whatever hub they come with, I am sure they are good as long as its their top of the line wheels. I had carbon hubs failed on me so the fancier you go, that means lightest, there always the possibility of them going bad due to the lack of materials. King hubs are normally pretty good. The question I have for you is, does a hub like that matter in terms of performance too you? If I am building a set of traditional wheels like you, Shimano Ultegra hub or DuraAce will be laced to that set of wheels. Not fancy King or White Industry or any of the smaller mfg hubs. The performance envelope is negligible. Oh, want to get fancy, get ceramic bearings.

I started riding last week with my bionic brace for my knee. Its been jsut 7 weeks off the bike. Its a btich riding with the brace due restriction from the brace's limited knee angle. Not to mention it hits the top tube. I bought a slightly less cumbersome brace so now it manageable. Did 80 combined miles last week breaking it up to 20 miles per ride. I tried to keep my usual pace of under one hour on my 20 mile loop with a couple of small hills. No go. My heart and lung was about to come put of my chest, was all I heard. Getting old sucks. Going out again in a few to try to make that under an hour. After that, I have hump up my one mile hill to my front door. Got to get it done. |

they are pretty and if I have the coin, well maybe its going to be a while I want to build the frame, butted steel tubes fillet brazed |
Here is the status of the apparatus
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1688004293.jpg It's a tall frame. I see why modern bikes no longer have the top tube parallel to the ground. Bars are coming and I decided to go to a longer brake instead of using a drop bolt. I'm using 700x32 tires. Nothing bigger will fit the chain stays so I got lucky choosing them. |
