Probably agree. We did have the most fun at the times when we were traveling with a group and sharing a table. The one time the two of us went alone we skipped the dinning room meals and ate at the bar or waited until the place cleared out and one of the small tables opened up. There were always other Europeans on the boats and we found out pretty quickly that not everyone shares our idea of table manners.

The Rhine river valley provides an amazing opportunity for a terrific vacation ( I lived in Bonn for a awhile back in the day). Not the question asked by the OP, but I'd recommend flying into Basel and renting a car. Drive the length of the river along its banks as much as possible. Stop for overnights along the way in the various towns of interest. Remagen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Remagen) for example, you can still see bullet holes in the original bridge columns and artillery impacts along the German tunnels in the cliffs.
Perhaps a castle-based hotel or two as you slowly head north. The cost of the cruise for two would pay for some very nice accomodations and meals/wine over the course of a week.I'd probably turn in the car and fly home from Cologne, unless you've never been to Amsterdam and really want to drive on the autobahn while its still got some "no limit" zones. Added benefit........hit the Nuerbergring less than as hour from Cologne before turning in the rental. |

Been to Neuschwanstein more times than I care to remember cause that’s the one out of town guests always wanted to see but i’ve seen most of them already. More castles is not something I mind so much but not something I need either. And i’ve literally backed up on the autobahn after blowing an exit. I’m good there too.

Just finished a trip from Prague to Budapest on Amawaterways. Stayed three days in Prague and then took a bus ride to Nuremberg where we got on the boat for 7 days. Boat was half full. Fantastic service and the food was great too. Tours were mostly about history of the cities. Saw a rally start and more castles and churches than I expected. Cost was $5000 pp and we spent another grand on extras massages and e tra excursions. They really were necessary. The basic trip includes so much. Went through 25 locks and that was interesting.

The more I read about these river cruises, the less I think they would be "for me" .... and it's probably "just me"

Can close this out.
The other couple leaning towards Viking came around after looking closer at Avalon. Some of the key things were Avalon rooms are 65 sq ft larger, more activities for active people, less passengers, more stops vs more days at a stop, happy hours, gotta have those happy hours Thanks guys
