stay outta the carpet shops. walk the Galata bridge. check out the spice bazaar. the palace is worth a look. Hagia Sophia for certain. a boat trip up the bosphorus is definitely time well spent. need a hotel recommendation? https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotel_Review-g293974-d294930-Reviews-Nena_Hotel-Istanbul.html

If you have a few weeks and are not stuck in Istanbul the whole time, i would think about some side trips to Cappadocia and Ephesus.

Again?
In Lima I had some serious 'issues' - I had the hotel water tested at one of our labs along side ice from the bar as well as a sample of bottled water. The hotel facets proved to provide no pathogens nor did the bottled water, however, the ice contained fecal, e-coli, and coliforms. I will do the same thing in Istanbul. Its cool working for a company that tests EVERYTING. www.SGS.com

When I was there for work we took a group tour by boat with a walk through the old city. I think that was worth it to understand the history of places you'd otherwise just walk through. The boat tour especially was great, as all of the landmarks were pointed out.
I could spend a lot of time in the Hagia Sophia just absorbing--that space is really something else. Listening to people mill about and children run, play and laugh in a building with 1500 years of history is a profound experience. I went there on a relatively slow day so I didn't feel rushed to leave. I'd also recommend Topkapi Palace. It's a bit touristy but there's good history there. Man, just wandering that city felt great, I would absolutely go back and spend more time if I could. Bring treats for the street animals.
