I am so delighted for you.

Tell me about the fireplace tools, please.

Congratulations, now you just need to make the time to enjoy it.

Thank you sir!

Strange but we looked at 3-4 actual "fireplace retailers" in Calgary and found that since most people now are opting for a gas or electric fireplace they were stocking only limited quantities of working fireplace tools....rather cheap looking crap, twas not impressed  ..and so I started looking online. Cheryl did finally find a nice set at Crate&Barrel.

These are not custom made but still look pretty cool and are solid brass...heavy man!

Makes the drive from Calgary worth while.

Best
Les

Thank you sir! It's not the beautiful Atlantic that you have but...it's pretty close!

The TCH is finally twinned (4 lanes) around Golden, BC which was about a 15 year project so that helps with the drive. So it's around a 6.5 hour drive for us door to door from Calgary. BTW DO NOT attempt the TCH around Lake Louise, AB to Field, BC and up through Rogers Pass WITHOUT decent and preferably studded snow tires from November 1 to April 15 or so!

Cheers!

(suggest editing out the permit pic)

Some erosion steps to channel the wash inbetween houses will make your downhill neighbors happy.
Congrats on your new palace!

Done!..thanks for the heads up!

We have a Rip Wrap project lined up for spring 2024 which hopefully will address the potential risk of erosion at the lower levels of our lot. We did install a small fence down there prior to construction to catch any runaway debris from descending onto our neighbour below us..so far, so good.

That's the plan and partly the reason we delayed the build. Cheryl retired 3.5 years ago. I am partly retired, still practicing 2 half days per week. I was supposed to retire on Monday, Jan 1/24 but have given it some more thought....plus the new practice owners are practically begging me not to! I told them....fine, I'll take it 6 months at a time...;)

I'm not a soil or civil engineer, but to be honest those pictures scare me a little.

Unlike your neighbor....with the overhang....only your deck is sitting on extensions.
That is good. Somewhat.

Your main house foundation weight is all located over dirt mass below, for the most part.
But those deck support piers look very under-sized!
10"x10" beams sitting on fragile 12" sono-tube pillars? Fifteen to 30 foot total length?

Maybe that could be supported by a wall into the slope? 48" below frost line.

More importantly, the entire hillside is exposed and not rocky enough without a root system.
Is there flood potential from above?
Erosion control now that it is all fresh will go a long way later on.

Bore deep. Cover up the surface at minimum. The deep tree roots are all gone.

Those are 45deg dirt slide angles.

Entire towns have been washed away by flood. Seen mud slides in N.California. Hillsides collapsed.
Don't be a victim of circumstance.

(I'm being a bit paranoid here but staying on the safety side.)

^^^We did incorporate a properly designed foundation by a team of engineers that are very familiar with the terrain so I'm not too concerned there. As far as flooding potential, the entire community of WRB has it's own infrastructure to handle runoff water. There is also ample infrastructure on the main road behind the community that is well designed for this part of the BC interior.

Unfortunately we didn't have champagne flutes, only cheap plastic wine glasses but that would still be just peachy fine!

Cheers!

Creating something like this is always a huge effort and investment, but just think of all the years of enjoyment you've created in the process.

Thank you sir!

Our timing was actually spot on as well as, unfortunately with the horrible events of this past summer with the wildfires across the lake, I understand that the demand for contractors in the Shuswap area has gone through the roof as the majority of those that lost properties have decided to rebuild....good for them and my condolences go with that as well.

A hats off to Launch Construction of Blind Bay just down the road from us....a great bunch of guys and gals to deal with!

Launch Construction Ltd: Award Winning Shuswap Home Builder

Would highly recommend!!
