The fact that they did not use violent crime rate tells you everything you need to know.

"Boston sees 655 violent crimes per 100,000, making the city less safe than 83 percent of US cities"

My question about all these surveys is: aren’t you just getting opinions from the sort of people who are willing to answer their phone and spend 10-20 minutes talking to someone they don’t know?

That has to be a very specific demographic and therefore not representative of the public at whole. Pretty much every phone survey is just the opinions of one type of person- probably a very lonely person!

Tomorrow's Gallup poll .... Rank your favorite food from these 15 items that you've never had?

Enquiring minds don't give a rat's behind....

But some do

Thanks for posting Steve. Boston isn't even on the list. It is really safe here I think.

#45 when sorted by "total violent crimes" column

I'll take it.

Going to the movies as much as I do and many times getting out very late at night, while it's a decent part of town, there are plenty of elements on the street late at night. I have never felt ill at ease EXCEPT just after COVID ended and opened up. It was then that I saw a lot of folks you would not want to meet at 12am with no one else around. It lasted about a week and then there were police on every frickin corner for a month and they were gone.

Updated, the first time that I posted @ #56, I had the sorting upside down. It's really #45 (from the top). New, correct screenshot posted.

Hey Shawn.

Mass and Cass or Dorchester not part of Boston?

I am not optimistic but it's been a major focus for the last year.

Bogus poll. Too few folks in each city, and the question is about "feeling" safe, not actual crime stats.

The table posted above not only does not include Boston but also New York City!!!!

Not to get all PARFy, but it is interesting to note how many cities in, say, Texas and Florida are less safe than NYC, according to the objective data listed.

Here's the methodology, I thought it was an interesting survey that, if anything, could spark serious analysis:

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted July 3-27, 2023, with a random sample of 1,015 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

Each city was rated by a random half-sample of approximately 500 adults.

For results based on these samples of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±5 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.

Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 80% cellphone respondents and 20% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone within region. Landline and cellular telephone numbers are selected using random-digit-dial methods.

In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

Yep, we went over the weirdness of the poll, the fact that it was random people that could have been anywhere in the US, and not necessarily folks IN any of those cities and based on what those random folks "thought" which could have all of the validity of a $3 bill or a wooden nickel.

But then I did post some actual crime stats (and the results were a little surprising to me).

The actual charts the FBI posts are more telling than the edited Wikipedia version. It covers more cities, is clearer about the areas covered (for each city) and points out that a lot of cities choose not to report or report differently.

Say it ain't so! LOL!

That reminds me of the fact that the US reports over 1 million covid deaths, India 500k+, Russia 300k, and China only had 5272. LMAO
