Do they use a catalyst in Japan?

Ive replace a few subaru motors recently with JDM engines .
The last 2 came with the exhaust manifolds still attached , and to my surprise, there were no cats where a subie would normally have one, and no provision in the wiring harness for downstream o2 sensors .
I have to swap EVERYTHING over to make these motors work in usa cars, but they seem like the best deal going for used replacement engines for Asian vehicles .
They also use 180 deg thermostats instead of 195 .

My mazda 121 runs very hot in Phoenix. It does not have the larger radiator as the Ford Aspires, which is the platform that the 121 was based on in America. Japan doesn't get that hot.

As for cats. I replaced a 1.7l Honda civic engine with a jdm. The cat was in the exhaust manifold. Just like the Japanese motorcycles....

I think they did by 2000 or so. Years ago I had a '96 Infiniti G20t and replaced the original engine with a high-compression JDM SR20DE. It came with a factory tubular exhaust manifold and a longer secondary and there probably wasn't a cat behind it. But I'm pretty sure Japan's emissions standards have more or less mirrored the US's for some time now.
