When we lived in Japan, we had a nice view out of the back of our base housing (farm fields with mountains in the distance). That was pretty cool, even as a kid.

We lived in an Apt near downtown for about 7 years and had a great view of the Houston skyline which was pretty cool (saw some beautiful sunrises from the 5th (top) floor).

Now we live in the country, and have a hay field to the west with trees past that (nice sunsets), a ravine to the east with trees for nice sunrises, to the South we have trees that block any view of I-10 and to the north a few of our acres with trees at the edge which blocks any view of 90 that we would otherwise have.

I think we're going to finish some renovations on this place and then sell it and move back to the burbs (Friendswood) to be near the grandkids. It's going to be tough to get a view. Most of the views down that way are because you've got a "creek" in your backyard which means the house has flooded, and we don't want that. In the burbs, I think you best bet is usually nice landscaping and an attractive wooden privacy fence.

I grew up with Lake Ontario as our backyard. I’ve lived on the ocean on Long Island. I’ve lived as an adult on a large bay with beautiful views, bald eagles etc. the last 11 years I’ve lived on a little city lot with no view. If there is anything of real value to me as an adult, it is to not have neighbors. I would be totally happy living in a forest with the nearest neighbor miles away. I hate living in a neighborhood. I would be willing to pay a premium for that, a view not so much anymore. ……now a view and no neighbors, that would be great if I win the lottery.

The view I had when I lived in Albuquerque was pretty awesome…

I'm fine on a lightly wooded small (1.5acres) lot .... I would not be happy at the place across the road - bigger house, 10 or so acres, not a single tree or bush on it, just grass.

Would not want to stare at city, etc. but otherwise... I just need green and growth around me.

I'd observe to the contrary that is a most perfect view. That 100 year event came and went without incident. And it would be a good thing if a bit of that extra water managed to stay on your property. Jelly here congrats that's a nice place.

Don’t forget the most important view. The Wife needs something to look at while she’s doing the dishes….

View is related to a feeling of place, of home, or of a feeling of comfort and security. A nice view, mountains in the distance, a glade of trees in the near view, water, a field with livestock grazing all make one feel comfortable, secure. A view of the EL rattling by out of your apartment window in the dirty old snow is not inspiring except maybe to make one move. My wife and I have a deck surrounded by woods with very large old trees up close (like giant gray shafts rising up out of sight into the treetops), with birdsongs going on, critters making their sounds and mostly quiet (except when the Mustangs and Chargers crowd decide to light it up on a Friday night out on the highway).
Lack of a good or inspiring view is what many of us have, and why when you finally get one it is valued and why people pay up for it.

A view is quite important. So much so that you pay extra for it.... Ocean view cabin on a Cruise... Ocean view room in the Seychelles or Palawan...

This is a small lower deck at my place in rural Vermont....(35 minutes to nearest hospital per the other thread)

The trade off of not having the great view is there's more money available for the house and shop. Unfortunately my retirement home budget doesn't allow for both. Or find a place with a great view that's a farther distance from civilization but we like visiting nice restaurants too much.

I live about two miles from the blue ridge, but down in a bit of a hole, with 20 some acres of woods around me. I miss my mountain views, but get them Nov-April. Still, I'd rather be on higher ground...
