How important is a view?
With all these posts about where to live, the one thing that seems hardest to decide is, "how good a view do I need?"
Water front, water view, mountain view, skyline etc. It seem the cost of having a very nice view makes property ridiculously expensive. So how important is it? |
Very important. I couldn't live without a view.
|
That is different for everyone. Like living close to a beach is for some.
I can't care less about a view out my window, but I live in a neighborhood and it is just a house across the street. We have lots of flowers in multiple flower beds, and a Koi pond. I have never in my life just sat on a porch and looked at a view, even when I was on vacation and saw pretty views. Not my style. I lived in Hawaii and the desire to go to the beach is all used up in me. I hate sand in my shorts, and nasty salt water has no appeal. Just looking at a view is not even on my list as important things. Your mileage may vary. |

It’s important to my wife and I. We have a panoramic mountain view from nearly everywhere on our farm. This was important to us when we bought our land and we still love it.
A mountain view does make for windy days… |

We stayed a a friend's cabin in Maine for a week. We thought it would be on a lake or have a view of the mountains but it was in the middle of the woods. Nice but no view. View is very important.

I like looking out back at all that grass somebody else has to take care of!

The view from our lake cabin.

About a year and a half ago I traded this ...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696537275.jpg ... which was too often this ... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696537316.jpg ... for this (and haven't looked back) ... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696537352.jpg |
my death hole apartment in LA faced out over a busy street. the bedroom window was basically filled with a marlboro billboard. it was like looking out into montana. then cigarette ads got banned and it was replace by an ad for a lifetime network cop show with some angry chick detective's giant head staring at me.
views matter. |
The view out the picture windows into the glade behind our house was a big selling point. It is the picture of serenity.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696539354.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696539354.jpg The serenity was shattered in the Spring of 2019 when we had an epic flood. The water was 7 feet deep. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696539354.jpg Coming home to this view makes me smile every time. |
I never thought about "a view" where I lived during the years of working and navigating life. Before I built my house after retirement, I didn't think about a view at the location. But after moving up here and seeing the view we have, I thoroughly enjoy it every day & am very thinkful to have it. I've posted pics here of the view from the front of our house before. We also have a little "retreat" in the back where we eat lunch and sometimes dinner that has a secondary view that's not spectacular but very calming, especially with the sweet breezes.

I had an Orca swim past my house earlier in the week (not stoned, I live at the beach). I took a photo but not a good pic. The view is always changing, I like it.

Not just a view, but I've always wanted to live on a street that has turns and elevation changes instead of just rows of houses. I did live in such a place for 2 years in a tract of homes and the backyard overlooked a small ravine. But the view was of massive power lines.
I lived in Boulder City NV for one year. I didn't live on the lake side of the city divided by a ridge where some of the town had views of Lake Mead. I worked on that side a lot because that's where the expensive houses were. The lake constantly changed. It was marvelous, but the weather sucked. I got the hell out of there in a year. |

I live in the mountains. If I were buying a house it would definatly need a good view and a nice creek. There are many around here. My house has neither but I lived here since I was 10 years old and everything else about it is good. I can ride my bicycle 10 minutes up or down the road and have a great view or a nice creek so its all good.

It was this until I moved west. I miss this view.
It's pretty damn important. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696543996.jpg |
When we lived in Japan, we had a nice view out of the back of our base housing (farm fields with mountains in the distance). That was pretty cool, even as a kid.
We lived in an Apt near downtown for about 7 years and had a great view of the Houston skyline which was pretty cool (saw some beautiful sunrises from the 5th (top) floor). Now we live in the country, and have a hay field to the west with trees past that (nice sunsets), a ravine to the east with trees for nice sunrises, to the South we have trees that block any view of I-10 and to the north a few of our acres with trees at the edge which blocks any view of 90 that we would otherwise have. I think we're going to finish some renovations on this place and then sell it and move back to the burbs (Friendswood) to be near the grandkids. It's going to be tough to get a view. Most of the views down that way are because you've got a "creek" in your backyard which means the house has flooded, and we don't want that. In the burbs, I think you best bet is usually nice landscaping and an attractive wooden privacy fence. |
I grew up with Lake Ontario as our backyard. I’ve lived on the ocean on Long Island. I’ve lived as an adult on a large bay with beautiful views, bald eagles etc. the last 11 years I’ve lived on a little city lot with no view. If there is anything of real value to me as an adult, it is to not have neighbors. I would be totally happy living in a forest with the nearest neighbor miles away. I hate living in a neighborhood. I would be willing to pay a premium for that, a view not so much anymore. ……now a view and no neighbors, that would be great if I win the lottery.

The view I had when I lived in Albuquerque was pretty awesome…

I'm fine on a lightly wooded small (1.5acres) lot .... I would not be happy at the place across the road - bigger house, 10 or so acres, not a single tree or bush on it, just grass.
Would not want to stare at city, etc. but otherwise... I just need green and growth around me. |

Don’t forget the most important view. The Wife needs something to look at while she’s doing the dishes….
J/K we share chores since we both work and we both like to cook. It helps to have a nice view while you do both. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696546552.jpg |

View is related to a feeling of place, of home, or of a feeling of comfort and security. A nice view, mountains in the distance, a glade of trees in the near view, water, a field with livestock grazing all make one feel comfortable, secure. A view of the EL rattling by out of your apartment window in the dirty old snow is not inspiring except maybe to make one move. My wife and I have a deck surrounded by woods with very large old trees up close (like giant gray shafts rising up out of sight into the treetops), with birdsongs going on, critters making their sounds and mostly quiet (except when the Mustangs and Chargers crowd decide to light it up on a Friday night out on the highway).
Lack of a good or inspiring view is what many of us have, and why when you finally get one it is valued and why people pay up for it. |
A view is quite important. So much so that you pay extra for it.... Ocean view cabin on a Cruise... Ocean view room in the Seychelles or Palawan...
This is a small lower deck at my place in rural Vermont....(35 minutes to nearest hospital per the other thread) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696550074.jpg Around this time of year this is the view http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696550128.jpg This is the view from my Uncles place in Ossining right on the river... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696550343.jpg The view from "The Edge" at Hudson Yards, NYC....amazing panoramic views of downtown Manhattan, Jersey City, Hoboken... The GF and I.. Apartments in the complex are for the 0.25% http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696550520.jpg |

Well, hanging out with Hugh this afternoon, this is the view he is stuck with. Ocean on one side, intercoastal on the other. And some great sunsets

My views are ok.

My million dollar view. Sunset 365 days a year. I can sit and watch it everyday.

The trade off of not having the great view is there's more money available for the house and shop. Unfortunately my retirement home budget doesn't allow for both. Or find a place with a great view that's a farther distance from civilization but we like visiting nice restaurants too much.

I live about two miles from the blue ridge, but down in a bit of a hole, with 20 some acres of woods around me. I miss my mountain views, but get them Nov-April. Still, I'd rather be on higher ground...
