The Nightmare Before Christmas

Truly incredibly, it's the 30th anniversary of the movie's release. I was 25, loved it. Have seen it once or twice over the years. AMC theaters are running it now. Medium size theater it was full. And oddly enough mostly with 25-30 year olds, and many younger.

It is a brilliant movie that really stands the test of time. The songs and animation and details and details and details make truly special.

The Houston Symphony is playing the movie and then playing the score live. THe missus wants to take the grandsons.

I would go see that! Having a live symphony orchestra play the score would make it extra special.

Here’s the thing..

It was stop motion. Not digital animation.

Stop motion means it was made with thousands of still shots that are put together afterwards. It’s a work of art.

227 puppets, over 109,000 frames, over 120 people working on it at any given time.

The director of photography for this and more Burton animation films (James and the Giant Peach, Corps Bride, Coraline) was Peter (Pete) Kozachik... A very good friend of mine. Pete passed away last month from PPA (what they think actor Bruce Willis has)

My buddy Pete was GREAT to be with, and always the smartest guy in the room...

Just as his symptoms started he decided to right a book and it was finally published in '21
"Tales From The Pumpkin King's Cameraman"
It's a great, insightful, and funny read ...

All of Pete's friends and past colleges miss him greatly...

Steve, if you do not do that, I will fly to Houston Intergalactic Airport, drive to your house, kick your ass, then take them myself

Pete was a GD genius

Nightmare before Christmas was recently remastered into a 4K with Atmos. It is spectacular!

NBC has always had a special place with us too. The Haunted Mansion is a “must see” every Christmas.

Cheers

I have watched NBC a few hundred times, 5 grandchildren. It is a very good movie. My middle guy is fascinated by the Halloween figures in the neighbor's yard, stares at them for hours, very cute.

The family and I just say this live to orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl with Danny Elfman and a few of the original "cast" members very cool show. His finale was playing Dead Mans Party with some original Oingo Boingo members.
