Cybertruck - Thoughts?
 

Opening it up for any and all thoughts about the Cybertruck.

I think it's silly but there a market for silly and it's different.

Would I own one? - Nope but my son would (My son and I discussed this some time ago, He's 26).

Production issues. It is going to be heavy 8000 lbs GVW and expensive, not to mention build quality issues.

Enthusiasts will overlook the obvious shortcomings, people who need a truck for work will stick with ICE.

Personally I think it's way too expensive, it's fugly, and I'm not sure the bed design will make it a good truck.

On the other hand, the price will give it status, and 99.9% will only carry groceries and kids.

I suspect EVs will result in many less trucks being sold. That's because EPA fuel requirements unintentionally favoring pickups will be moot. Who knows? Maybe the station wagon will be back in vouge.

The station wagon is very much in vogue today; they call them crossovers now.

One of my friends has one on order, and it has been a log time coming to get delivery.

He is single, he has a 911 SC, a C7 Corvette, a 66 Split window and he sold two other Vettes he had to use that cash for the Cyber truck. He also has 4 motorcycles.

That will never be a working truck.

Not interested in any truck that doesn't have a full eight foot box.

I use my old F250 as a real truck. Don't need it every day anymore, but when I need it, I need all of it.

That is not a truck, not even remotely....

My grandkids power wheels are more of a truck than that thing.

Novelty vehicle. People will buy it to be seen it, not drive/use it.
Like a sports car with an automatic transmission. lol

Ugly/over priced/useless as a truck . Did I mention ugly ?

It's a "look at me vehicle".
Add it to the long list of others that fit the category.

I am curious what the production version will look like if they ever make it.

I think the flat panels will be its main downfall. Rivian built an electric truck with as many cool features as they could fit in it. They get form follows function. The Cybertruck does not.

Rivian makes and excellent van. Ask Amazon

Have you seen pick up trucks in Europe. Nope all vans.

Never understood the love for the pick up truck here. They are less than ideal compared to a van.

I've driven vans and based on that experience I prefer driving / using a pick up.

You'd think that someone with the nickname "flatbutt' would naturally gravitate to the C'truck

Given the tolerances he is looking for, I am not sure it can be built. He already ditched the exoskeleton.

Not to be picky but the split window Vette was '63 only. I liked it but rear vision problems killed it. I'm ashamed of the few that I converted for customers. I was in the fiberglass business out of high school.

AFA the Cyber truck goes, I don't like it. Tht means nothing, but it really doesn't do anything well, IMHO.

There is definitely a need for a true mid size PU in the market. An EV would mean better weight distribution and a lower deck in the bed. It could even have the 48" width and with a tailgate and accessory add on for the back, it could meet the 8' need when that arises. That extension assembly should be built in so that it is onboard and available when needed. No more difficult than a spare tire holder which are disappearing.

The Rivian is interesting. At least it doesn't appear to sacrifice function in order to look different.

It's going to have a hard time competing with the Ford Lightning. People who just want a serious electric truck are going to stick to a known brand. The Rivian and Cyber trucks will attract people who just want something different, but will that be enough to keep the companies afloat?

Sub 10 Micron panel fit.......not possible.

It's just change, time marching on. Yep, it's ugly but we'll get over it. Not sure why its bullet proof though. Seems like an odd thing to do.

I'm on the waitlist. will I buy it? probably not, but when I got on the waitlist I would have.

I like the longass range. at the time, they touted 500ish miles. even the middle 80% of that would suffice for my kayak fishing trips. how it looks or the prestige or lack of prestige of owning one...I have gotten to the point I don't give two effs, what anyone else thinks anymore.

the urged passed and I bought a new truck out of need...now it appears I have gone a different path.

I can't get over the Rivian's retro-cartoon headlights. (And, boy are Rivian's popular in Portland.)

I see a lot of Rivians in my area, both trucks and SUV's. I jumped on a Rivian BBS when they first started up and still follow it occasionally.

In the beginning "Honeymoon" stage, it was all about "Got an email from my Rivian Guide, truck will be delivered and walked through next month. Can't wait!".

Then they would be delivered without spare wheel, floor mats, etc. due to parts backordered. Problems with keyless entry/start, fit/finish, etc.

Then it was "Got rear ended today. Advisor says it will be 6 months or longer to repair due to parts availability" and you had to use one of their authorized repair facilities. I saw some small fender benders that looked like they would "buff out" but ended up costing in the $40k range after diminished value, rental car fees, etc.

Now no more Guides, you have to go pick up your truck at the nearest facility and drop off for repairs (some driving hundreds of miles).

I also read that they are losing a substantial amount of money on each sale. Don't know how long it will take to iron out these problems.

I think Tesla completely blew it with the CyberTruck. Trucks are such an important vehicle to Americans. This was a lost opportunity to build a vehicle that may have lured those sitting on the fence or curious about EVs into giving them a chance.

Its to big, it's ugly, its to expensive and doesn't seem particularly useful.

I want is a full sized Mercedes Benz sedan that I can fix myself.

I can't help but think it was a joke by FvH and his team one slow Friday afternoon in the studio and Musk walked in, saw it, and said "That's it! Print!" It puts a smile on my face, but not in a complimentary way.

elon was quoted as saying there should be sub 10 micron tolerances on these parts ... thats kind of a bad idea. as someone who works on micron and sub micron stuff, thats really dumb.

human hair is about 75 microns in diameter for example. there is no way you are affordably making 10 micron tolerances on a car body, esp when your well known for having **** body panel alignment already. never mind alignment and fabrication to smaller than a human hair.

Pickups are very useful vehicles, but their uses have now gone well beyond what the trucks were originally designed for. Some modern versions, with sunroofs, leather interiors, fancy paint and lots of chrome, are more at home in the mall parking lot, or chauffeuring the kids to school, than they are on a ranch or a job site.

I saw a Cybertruck on the road while driving across town this past weekend. No time for pics 'cause it was passing me going in the opposite direction. It had some writing on the door, but it passed too quickly to make out what it said. Maybe a pre-production prototype out for testing? Tesla's CA assembly plant is only about an hour's drive from here.

I hope Fisker survives in the market this time. They've got some cool stuff. Here's their pickup, the "Alaska."

And then there is the weird looking Canoo electric vehicles.

I’ve seen one in person.

Maybe the most awful vehicle ever made. (And yes, I’d rank the Aztek to be better).

And just my luck I live in a town and neighborhood where those things will actually sell. It won’t be long now before I’m seeing them everywhere.

I just hope and pray my immediate neighbors don’t get them. They won’t park them in the garage, so I’ll have to watch them sit on the street all day. Looking at a virtual rolling dumpster, yeah, nice.

And just my luck one of them will probably leave one in front of my house.
