NB/NC/ND is your droid here. for 11.5 you are looking at a very nice NB, or a reasonable NC2/3. both substantially better cars.
miatas are probably better sportscars, although I suspect the interior of a BMW is probably better than an miata. (not that miatas have bad interiors).

I had a '97 miata (NA). My wife had a '99 miata (NB). I also had an '04 MSM. I test drove NC miatas when I bought the MSM. I've never driven an ND, but I certainly like them on paper (and visually).

The stock seats in a miata aren't supportive if you're doing much sporty driving, at least, not after driving a Porsche (my old '88 targa and my '08 BS have worlds better seats). The stock NA and NB suspension (at least our '97 and '99) were both too soft for aggressive driving. I performed foamectomy on the driver's seat in my '97 and my '04 MSM, and that made a huge difference. I upgraded the suspension on my '97 ($400 for Bilsteins which didn't do the trick, then $400 for a Ground Control upgrade for another $400) and that made a huge difference. The suspension on my MSM was much better than on our other two cars. I was quite happy with it.

The one that my buddy has looks like this.

which I prefer to this. The flared fenders just didn't work for me.

Until you get to this which is hot.

Although I do prefer this to all of ^those^

But then I also prefer this

to this (aesthetically). Not that I dislike the 427, or wouldn't love one. I just think the lines on the AC Ace or Cobra 289 are a better, cleaner look. Flares don't always improve everything.

I have to say that a Z3 with the 2.8 was the most disappointing BMW I've ever driven. But if they check your boxes, why not?
