Read the article yesterday. It is Washington Post behind a paywall but Firefox reader view works. Very sad, but the dude had some sort of compulsive disorder, not just about his audio but also his work. Very sad.

It was definitely a tragic end for him and his family but the (tarnished) silver lining is a guy was able to realize his dream through years/decades of dedication.

There's a sad cost to any obsession.

Its the journey i get it, but kinda cringe at worlds best stereo. Ive seen the documentary a few times and its great, but the truth is 100k check togenelec or other premier studio vendor and a professional dsp calibration to the room would be a substantially higher fidelity system.

The guy got something that made him happy. He didn’t steal from anyone to get it - he paid for it with his own $ and got exactly what he wanted. We should all be so lucky…

Genelec.com (aschens comment)

Maybe $80k if you talk to them before you build the room.

$75K if you connect with the absolute right dude there.

Enjoyed the video.

Great story and system but honestly, a little difficult to truly understand.

As I get older I do things to simplify my life. Family and loved ones come first. I still have my hobbies but they're in check.

I didn’t read the story yet, but I was at a friends house the other day, and he had a stereo for lack of a better word, that sounded incredible. I think he said the speakers were $15 K. The amplifier and turntable were works of art, to my untrained eye. Sitting in the chair, listening to the records was fantastic. So crisp and clean.

When Pavulon says obsession he is understating.

Your friend's turntable is beautiful. It's maybe 1/4 of the subject turntable which was built by the fellow with the obsession.

Having a home audio set up WAS one of my dreams. Until I realized I wouldn't have the time to just sit and listen. I'd rather listen in the car while driving...

My brother from another mother!

I feel the same way, I cannot just sit and only listen to music, so at home I just have a fairly cheap A/V control unit hooked up to a speaker selector with bookshelf speakers in the living room and basement and ceiling speakers in the garage and bathroom.

Porsche has close to $5,000 in audio, which is a comprise due to wind and road noise, but it greatly enhances my driving time.

I wonder how cheaply a person could get by making an awesome home system. I bet that the room acoustics makes more of a difference than insanely expensive gear.

I'm Keeping it as simple as you can.

I'm playing around with a new setup. only 3 pieces.

Audio Source
Amp
Good Speakers

Starting in reverse:

Klipsch Speakers, very efficient. Clean sound with two 10's and a horn.
Carver Stereo Amp, 200 true watts per channel.
Your audio source, in my minimalistic form, an Alexa Dot with 3.5mm output jack.

It's my Kitchen system.

Headphones eliminate dealing with the room acoustics if you just want to immerse yourself in high-fidelity.

High spl headroom, state of the art fidelity, high quality craftsmanship

With a good room you can get 2 of these for 3-5 k, all 3 is at least 10

It is a sad story and an uplifting story.

I have a dedicated listening room with what some call a crazy system. I am lucky that my wife and kids approve and enjoy. I do spend way more time than them listening to music on the system.

Hard to beat when one of the kids asks to play some of their music in your system.

2/3 of my vinyl, gave myself an early Christmas present when I found this Mac 2600 for the right price. Did not think tubes would make a difference from my old Yamaha C-6. Big difference. Now keep the TimeWindows or go to B&W?

The slippery slope. Is that Bluesound Node blocking your preamp from venting? Same with the Yamaha, most components need 3"- 4" air gap above it
