I took the form to the DMV in person. We will see.
Reminds me that I never got tags year before last. I paid by check. One fellow at the DMV had me read him the endorsement code on the back. He told me when and a t what office the check was processed. This was my 3rd call that got through out of 20 of so.

So this cat tells me I'm good and he's sending out replacements. Never came. I just drove the year with out of date tags. I really don't give a rat's ass about anything CA. I just live here, I'm not part of it.

So I went in person and they said they have no record of my car. My father owned since 1985, and then I had owned it for about 10 years. I renewed and drove it every year. Then it just disappeared from their records. I had to pay $950 to establish a new registration for it. Gotta love the DMV.
OK, that story is nuts. No way would I pay $950 for their mistake (losing all records of the vehicle.). I'd pay a reasonable amount for my mistake (being late), but not theirs.

Since I insure with AAA, all I do to pay the annual registration fee is go into the AAA office in our town, hand them the registration card and a check for DMV fees, and walk out five minutes later with my annual tag. Never have to deal with the DMV dolts.

In my small town the line at AAA is longer than our small DMV office.

The Chicago DMV is awful. Those that work there have a sense of entitlement and the only will focus on what is assigned to them. Don't ask any questions, because you don't get any answers. It is a not my job mentality. I use the online process for the city sticker and license plate renewals. When I got my DL renewed, I went to the DMV 20 miles outside of the city - the service was much better.

Everyone does automated answering - I spent almost an hour in cue waiting to talk to someone at Social Security.

Something similar happened to my buddy with his basket case Knucklehead. He took it off the road for nearly 10 years. Then when he went to renew the tags he had to pay for those 10 years plus a penalty!

California DMV will try to do that to you, too. DMV assumes you've been driving/riding bandito alll that time, so you owe back reg fees plus their insane penalties. But there's also a form (statement of fact?) you can submit that attests the vehicles has not traveled on or over public roads since last registration, thereby waving those fees and penalties. Have not tried that myself, but that was the plan when I went to look at a couple of barn finds some years back.
