Before/after photos of a Unimog I sold 10 years ago

Here are some photos of a truck I sold about 10 years ago to a guy in HI. It wasn't perfect when I sold it, but nothing like it is now! I just sold the guy a starter for it, as now he wants to get it running and sell it. I told him if he pays for my airfare and a place to stay, I would be glad to come out and put the starter in! Its been cold and snowy here!

Yikes, that's rough. Did he ever enjoy it at all?

Btw, what's the latest on your 416? Still have it?

That’ll buff right out (someone had to say it). Seriously…that’s painful to look at. Such a special vehicle. I can’t imagine acquiring that beast to just let it disintegrate before my eyes.

Hawaii is no place for old motor-vehicle steel.

Was the rust in the same spots as now when you repaired it?
It came back with a vengeance or this is new?

Wow! 10 years did that? It looks like a ww2 plane found in the jungle.

Is this salt air and sulpher? Crazy.

Doesn’t need a starter - needs to send the truck back to you.

I didn't do any rust repair to the cab, just had to buff it out, the bed I had to rebuild and repaint. Looks to be in a bit better shape than the cab.

Jeeeezus! That's a cryin' shame. How much is a basket case 'mog worth?

I can't imagine the freight charges to and from Hawaii.

(Free, i guess if you're a serviceman getting transferred.)

Wait...he left it outside for 10 years and it completely disintegrated? That doesn't even look repairable.

Rain will not do that. It has to be salt and lots of it. The only time I've seen worse trust is in MN. and WI. but it would only be on the bottom half, not the roof. That looks like scrap metal now.

Some small details are different. I don't think it's the same truck.

No, its the same truck, now missing the roof rack and when I took the finished photo the winch was not on or the rope tie downs on the sides of the bed.

With the size of the hole in the roof and the condition of all the glass the interior must be one toxic mold jungle ! Very sad to see deteriation like that .

Owner must have driven it home and didn't rinse it off with fresh water

When I got orders to join the 3rd Marine Regiment at MCAS Kaneohe in '76, I was foolish enough to have my `71 Duster 340 shipped over. Should've bought a junker from somebody who was rotating out, because my beloved Duster developed significant rust in less than three years.

They are very rust prone. Mine was starting to get rusty when i sold it. It had been (poorly) fixed before I bought it.

I was in taiwan a bit and there was sulpher escaping from the ground which made sulphuric acid and ate all the metal. Weird stuff like Electrical contacts, but cars too. Maybe this happens in hawaii too?

Or acid rain from the vog?
