Pig Butchering Scams

Last year this was attempted with me and I get 10 FB friend requests a month, all who have 10 to 30 same friends as me, some hot women with Porsche/race car profiles and some from older men who are living fantastic lifestyles with Ferraris and such. I have confirmed some friend requests and get an almost instant very friendly message from them. Then I unfriend them/block them. The attempt last year I took pretty far and then realized it was a bitcoin scam so I trolled her/or him and she got really mad. That was a lot of fun but probably stupid.

Anyway, the segment is very information and extremely entertaining.

Saw this on slashdot a while ago

My comment was along the lines of knowing quite a few people who would click a link offering a good price on a scalding tub, powered scraping tool or even just a good set of butchering tools...

It is a warning worth heeding...passed it on to a guy I know in Cleveland who does social media. He's currently in a hospital on post surgery pain meds that could cloud his judgement...warned him to be especially cautious.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/26/investing/crypto-scams-fbi-tips/index.html
Pig butchering operations typically begin with a rudimentary approach, Rosen tells CNN: Scammers blast out millions of unsolicited messages each day to unsuspecting victims via text message and social media, often with an innocuous note like, “Hi, how are you?”

The scammer operating under a false identity builds a relationship with the victim, sometimes over just a few weeks, before suggesting the victim “invest” in cryptocurrency.

Excellent post and thread. With my wife's Alzheimer's I'm going to have to see about what to do with our joint bank savings account. I see they have a Safe Pass card that I could keep and it would require me for her to log in. No card, no log in.

IDK how it works. I've read conflicting information. I'm not looking for 2-step verification. I guess there is a physical card that generates the 6 digit number. Sounds like that would only work at an ATM which we never use.

without watching the video. There's a local scam where one will split the cost on a 1/4 to 1/2 a cow. The person setting up the butcher will take the best cuts and undercut the unsuspecting joes by a couple hundred pounds.

I have Faceplant and LinkedIn accts. I try to keep my activity pretty limited on both. Networking is one of the best ways to get/upgrade/change jobs, so that's what got me started on both of those sites. It's a way to stay in touch with colleagues.

I find it really weird when I get requests from attractive ladies that are obviously BS. I always ignore those. I'm always curious about those accounts, what are they really doing on there.

For LinkedIn I have a minimum threshold - I should've at least spoken with you on the phone, or even better, had a meeting with other people present.

I understand for Shaun, who has a business, he may feel the need to connect. I suggest looking at setting up actual business pages on FB and LI as opposed to your personal account having friends or connections you've never actually met. Even LI allows "Follow" as default instead of "Connect" for certain people.

Just got this email, best I've seen so far, of course I don't have a card ending in 4491 so I guess that's good news. If I did I would still log into Geico.com or call CS. Usually these fishing emails are so bad you would have to be pretty old or not in 100% control of your mental faculties to click. I always check the email too and then google that as additional confirmation.

I don't get it. HTF does anyone even think about replying to those unsolicited texts? I get them every day, delete and mark as junk, sometimes block the number if the junk option doesn't appear. There's no better way to make me hate you than to send me a text if you're not in my address book or I haven't given you a business card in the course of conducting business.

I think the reason the "wrong number" sort of opening text has gotten so big is that many folks are trying to be nice. "this person sounds nice" or "this text sounds important" and then "I should warn them that the text didn't go where it needed to go so they can find the right person". But, like you, any unsolicited texts or calls get unanswered. If it's a text, I generally just delete them, unless I can tell for sure that it's BS, then I block the number too. If it's calls, they go to VM, and pretty much NEVER leave a message.
