Drill bit

I have a 10mm head bolt that snapped on the oil pan. Unfortunately, my drill bit is too short because of the chuck and the side of the oil pan. Are there longer drill bits made that can handle this job. Trying to avoid taking the oil pan off. Maybe there is a tool with a smaller chuck? Suggestions please.

Look up Milwaukee aircraft length drill bit. 12" is too long and it becomes too difficult to use or get it started accurately. There should be something in between but I stick to DeWalt or something similar .

Is that engine on a stand? Can you just remove the oil pan? A carefully placed pilot hole about 1/8"dia will help keep the larger drill going straight, can you make a bushing to help guide the drill?

Change of plan. Son took oil pan off and still can’t get bolt out. I drilled right through it but maybe not centered. Can I use a helicoil on an oil pan bolt?. I’m thinking since hole is already there, why not but I’m a garage hack. Advice?

Yes to a helicoil. A timesert is better but a helicoil will work in this case.

Do you have a mig welder? I don’t know if you have enough metal left, but there’s a way to weld a nut to what’s left and back it out.

Thank everyone. I do have a mig and a welder (son) but I think a helicoil will be enough to just get over with. Thanks again everyone.

I just had to do this on a bolt in my '56 coupe. I bought a left hand drill and Easy Out set and still had to use a torch to heat the casting. Sometimes that left hand drill bit will take the bolt out all on its own.

"Left hand drill bit". I know that I've heard of those before (here, actually) but always forget about them. I remember breaking a bolt off in something when I was a teen. Ugh, what a horrible experience.

I'm pretty sure when you break a bolt off, that the car is then a write off. Better to just trash it and get a new one that doesn't have a broken bolt.

Yup, reverse drill bit. works on its own about half the time. For the rest, get the Snap-On extractor set.
